DETROIT - You can actually run the football with Barry Sanders, throw with Rodney Peete and intercept a pass with Bennie Blades at Michigan’s retro Tecmo Super Bowl video game tournament. People come from all over the country to compete in this annual event which uses the old 1991 Nintendo game.
The 8th annual tournament takes place on Saturday, March 8, 2020 at Bookie’s Bar and Grill located at 2208 Cass Ave. in Downtown Detroit beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Sign up to play: The Black Belt championship is $45 ($40 if paid by 2/29; Brown Belt is $35 ($30 if paid by 2/29). You can also register the morning of the tournament. News and updates on the tournament can be found on the Tecmo Kumite Detroit Facebook page.
This year’s event will feature two levels of competition: The Black Belt ultimate championship and the Brown Belt division for beginner/intermediate players. The two divisions are meant to give people of all skill levels a chance to win even if they haven’t played the game since the early 1990s.
“Some of our players will be real enthusiasts and some will be casual players that pick up the game once or twice a year," said event organizer and former champion Matthew O’Toole. "Whatever your skill level, we’ve designed things so that all will have a great time and have a chance to win some great prizes.”
