Tencent Reportedly Making An ‘Elden Ring’ Mobile Game With ‘Genshin Impact’ Monetization - Forbes

Elden Ring is generally held up to be a paragon of modern gaming, an epic, sweeping open world adventure game with a stunning landscape and challenging combat. A one-off adventure at a set price with no further purchases except a pending expansion.

Well, Tencent wants it to evolve into…something else.

There’s a new report out of Reuters which cites three different sources saying that Tencent has been trying to develop a mobile game based on Elden Ring. The attempt comes in the wake of the fact that Tencent acquired the licensing rights for the game in 2022, so they can in fact do a project like this if they want.

But how it’s being described is unsettling, and the antithesis to everything Elden Ring currently is. From the report:

“Tencent wants to make it a free-to-play game with in-app purchases, similar to the hit game Genshin Impact, developed by its Chinese rival miHoYo.”

This is, of course, insanity to most Elden Ring fans, and while this project has not been officially announced, even the premise would be somewhat revolting. However, it’s true that the Asian market is much more receptive to mobile games and in-app purchases than the West, generally speaking, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that such an idea could prove to be a hit, however unlikely.

The report seems to indicate it’s a bit of a Hail Mary from Tencent, who has struggled to produce other successful mobile projects as of late outside of PUBG mobile. Another issue is that using a license can make actually squeezing profits out of related projects difficult, hence the desire for some sort of Genshin Impact-like monetization system. Can’t wait to pull for five star Malenia, Blade of Miquella!

So yes, this will be laughed out of the room in most places, but it’s not completely out of the realm of possibility this does end up existing someday and could launch in some regions, even if it’s not necessarily the US. For now, this is just a report from Reuters and it’s unclear if this will manifest as an actual game. Tencent already killed a Nier mobile game because they couldn’t figure out monetization. And if they had trouble with Nier, I can imagine Elden Ring would be even harder.
