‘Destiny 2’ Just Nerfed The Whole Game After ‘Bullet Sponge’ Complaints - Forbes

It’s been a bit of an odd time for Destiny 2 in the wake of Lightfall, where a mission to “bring the challenge back” to Destiny resulted in some intensely difficult lower level activities and some weirdly easily high level ones. Now, a lot of Bungie’s Lightfall changes have been scaled back with a series of nerfs to enemies, and an upcoming slate of big buffs to player weapons.

Yesterday, a hotfix changed the following in the game:

Legend and Master enemies received a 10% health reduction in all activities with those difficulties – It’s not a huge change, but it can be noticeable when you kill something in two headshots over three, etc. It also doesn’t change enemy damage which continues to be high with players locked at -15 or -20 under power. This does not include “Legendary” missions like players’ initial Lightfall campaign run.

The health scalar for larger fireteams was reduced by 33% in the Legend AVALON exotic mission – This was one of the singular hardest activities in the entire game, a wild difference from last season’s Legend Seraph’s Shield mission, and a main problem was that enemy health just became ridiculous as you added one or two players to your team, because it was a rare activity that adds health on fireteam scaling like the Legendary campaign. Now that’s been lessened.

Neomuna patrol spawns less orange bar enemies – They did not reduce the beefy health of enemies on Neomuna, which somehow have more HP than Master raid enemies, but I have seen far less orange bars roaming around which had absurd amounts of health with the -15 power setting.

So that’s one half of things, and those changes are live now. But Bungie has a series of big buffs planned, significant primary weapon upgrades that affect both legendaries and exotics:

  • Auto Rifles are getting a 25% buff to red and orange bar enemies.
  • Pulse Rifles, Hand Cannons and Sidearms are getting a 20% buff.
  • Scout Rifles are getting a 10% buff.

This includes things that are already feeling incredibly strong, like Quicksilver Storm, which just got its 40% red bar damage bonus restored in the hotfix yesterday, and will now get another 25% damage increase on top of that in a week or two. So we are about to see a wild difficulty swing potentially back in the other direction.

And yet I still don’t think this will make Destiny 2 as easy as it once was. Bungie has kept the Legend/Master power deltas in place, so enemies 15 or 20 power above you are still hitting very hard. These changes were mainly to address complaints of enemies feeling like bullet sponges, as that’s not necessarily challenging, it’s just deeply un-fun. But you’ll still need to play carefully not to die, in most instances.

There are some weird outliers that remain with current Destiny 2 difficulty, where normal and Master raid difficulties feel weirdly easy compared to everything else, albeit Master rewards aren’t where they need to be either. All of this is ahead of some massive power overhaul coming within the next year, and it seems like it’s going to be a bit of a chaotic time until then.
