There’s Already A ‘Squid Game’ Video Game Knock-Off And It’s Hilarious - Forbes

Well that was fast.

Netflix’s smash hit Squid Game has already spawned a video game knock-off—with more on the way.

The game is called Crab Game, though there’s nothing specifically crabby about it that I’m aware of. But hey, as far as I’m concerned crab is a lot tastier than squid so I’m okay with it.

I’m sure there are already other Squid Game ripoffs on mobile app stores, but I don’t really play mobile games all that much, so I’ll stick to Steam—which is where you can find Crab Game.

The game is 100% free to download and play. Just be warned: It’s absolutely ridiculous.

Crab Game was made by a solo dev named Dani who describes the game with the following disclaimer:

“Crab Game is a First-Person Multiplayer game where you fight for the ultimate cash price in different minigames based on children's games, until only one player is left to claim it all. Definitely not based on any online streaming pop culture korean tv shows, as that would get me in legal trouble, so we're certainly not doing that.

Crab Game pits up to 40 players against one another in a series of competitive games where you smack each other with bats, try to knock one another off ledges and race across grassy fields.

You can create or join a server and play through a series of rounds, some of which are more obviously influenced by Squid Game than others—like the lobby nighttime fight that takes place after snack time, where you’ll see lots of players hiding out on the distinctly Squid Game-looking bunk beds.

Everyone looks the same in this low-budget affair: Vaguely Korean-looking (I guess?) bug-eyed dudes in blue jumpsuits. Unlike snowflakes, each character is exactly alike.

It’s a knock-off but not a cash-grab, basically. The game is entirely free and mostly just good for a laugh. It’s also kind of fun from what little I’ve played. Gamers certainly seem to enjoy it, giving Crab Game a “Very Positive” user review score.

Just . . . consider muting the voice chat if you decide to play.

This is the first Squid Game knock-off to hit Steam but not the last. Another, called Squid Guys, lands on PC later this month. That title takes Fall Guys and Squid Games and jams them together rather brazenly, but really it’s not half bad.

Squid Guys has two things that Crab Game doesn’t: The distinct pink-uniformed guards from the Netflix show and a giant, creepy baby:

I’m not sure it will have Crab Games’ goofy charm, either. We shall see.

For what it’s worth, the best Squid Game analog in video games is still Fall Guys. But really, any battle royale will do.

My hope is that we get some games that aren’t just knock-offs of Squid Game or PUBG and start finding creative ways to blend the notion of games and battle royale and various competitive mechanics together. Battle royale as a concept has lots of room to grow and evolve from where it’s currently at.
