Ticker: Vintage Super Mario game sells for $114,000; Gas prices edge up; Children’s Museum announces reopening - Boston Herald

An unopened copy of a vintage Super Mario Bros. video game has been sold for $114,000 in an auction that underscored the enduring popularity of the games created decades ago.

A bidder who wished to remain anonymous snapped up an early version of the pioneering Super Mario Bros. game released in 1985 for Nintendo’s NES console during an auction conducted by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions.

The $114,000 price eclipsed Heritage Auctions’ previous record amount for a video game, which was a $100,150 bid made early last year for an unopened copy of the same game.

The Super Mario Bros. copy that sold for a new record was part of a collection of video games from the 1980s and 1990s that sold to various buyers for nearly $700,000, which was well above Heritage Auction’s initial target of about $500,000.

Other titles auctioned off included “Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!” a 1987 video game based on the former former heavyweight boxing champion, that sold for $50,400.

Gas prices edge up

The average U.S. price of regular-grade gasoline increased by 2 cents over the past two weeks, to $2.24 per gallon.

That’s 59 cents below the average pump price from a year ago.

Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey said Sunday that the increase comes as crude oil prices rise.

The highest average price in the nation for regular-grade gas is $3.20 per gallon in the San Francisco Bay Area. The lowest average is $1.79 in Houston.

The average price of diesel is $2.54, down a penny from two weeks ago.

Children’s Museum sets reopening

The Boston Children’s Museum is reopening its doors later this month, having been closed since mid-March because of the coronavirus.

The museum will hold a members-only weekend from July 17-19 then open to the general public on July 22, management announced Saturday.

The museum will be open Wednesdays through Sundays with two time slots. Capacity will be limited and tickets must be purchased in advance.

The museum will also reduce touchpoints and enhance its cleaning and sanitization protocols.
