Following on from its Friday the 13th game, IllFonic has developed an asymmetrical multiplayer game based on the 80s Horror Sci-Fi comedy film, Killer Klowns From Outer Space alongside Teravision Games. The title was revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live in 2022 with a cinematic trailer that demonstrated the game's zany, humorous tone and confirmed it would also be taking place in the 80s like its movie counterpart.

The premise of Killer Klowns From Outer Space is exactly what its title suggests. A clan of evil extraterrestrials who resemble clowns arrive on Earth and invade a small town with the intent to capture, kill, and harvest the human inhabitants to use as sustenance. While it didn't have a big success at the box office, it gained its cult following upon its VHS home release.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space is a current-gen exclusive, releasing on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and PC. This shouldn't be too surprising as the game's reveal trailer made it clear that Illfonic's game would be targeting more photorealistic fidelity settings to better match the designs of the characters in the 1988 movie, which were created through impressive practical effects. Good Shepherd Entertainment also released a Movie vs Game comparison to show how closely Teravision and Illfonic were able to match these visuals.

Five Klowns Will Be Playable With Different Playstyles

Despite its more comedic tone, Killer Klowns from Outer Space is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror title, so its core gameplay should be familiar to those who are fans of Dead by Daylight. The title sees players take on the role of one of five Killer Klowns to hunt and harvest the population of Crescent Cove using outlandish abilities and zany weapons in teams of three. Alternatively, players can fight back against the alien invasion in a team of seven, in which they will have to collect loot and weapons in a bid to survive. Each team will have dynamic objectives leading to multiple match results, with some PvPvE elements creating a more unique approach to the hide-and-seek gameplay seen in other titles within the genre.

Jumbo The Scout	Jumbo the Scout is used to actively seek out humans, using a powerful Klown Jump to leap into unexplored territory. Shorty The Fighter	The Fighter is based on Shorty from the Killer Klowns From Outer Space film and is the more traditional combatant for the group. Shorty is the most agile Klown and uses his Boxing Gloves to attack his enemies. Shorty can also use a skill that transforms him into a pizza box to sneak close to his opponents. Chubby The Tank	The Tank is based on Chubby from the Killer Klowns From Outer Space film and is the most physically formidable of the Klowns. Chubby primarily uses a chargable Extendable Jawbreaker weapon to attack the humans, and a Rage Rush skill to quickly charge at them, clearing any obstacles in his way. Players can also use Chubby to recreate an iconic movie moment, using the Sticky Bash ability to cover the area in Cotton Candy and trap humans in a cocoon, then inserting a straw into them and slurping to get a speed buff. The Klowns Return Summer 2024

A new trailer for Killer Klowns From Outer Space was shown as part of IGN's 2024 Fan Fest announcements, confirming that the game will be released on June 4, 2024. Although the game has been available to wishlist on Steam since its 2022 reveal, pre-orders became available on February 21st, 2024 across all platforms. With Teravision and Illfonic clearly trying to recreate what fans loved about the movie from its aesthetic to its humor, while building upon the popular asymmetrical horror genre, Killer Klowns from Outer Space should certainly have plenty for players to enjoy upon its release this summer.
