CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Illinois football game on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Memorial Stadium against Purdue will kick at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN2.
Illinois (7-2, 4-2) is in first place of the Big Ten West, one game ahead of a four-way tie for second place between Purdue, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The Illini control their own destiny for a Big Ten West championship, needing a win over Purdue plus one more win over Michigan or Northwestern to guarantee a spot in Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship Game on Dec. 3.
Illinois and Purdue play each year for the coveted "Cannon." The "Cannon," more accurately known as the Purdue Cannon, made its first trip to Champaign-Urbana in 1905 when a group of Purdue students brought it to fire after a Boilermaker victory. Purdue won the game, 29-0, but the Cannon was never fired. Illinois student Quincy Hall found the Cannon hidden near the old Illinois Field and moved it to his farmhouse near Milford, Illinois. There, it survived a fire and gathered dust until 1943, when Hall donated it as a symbol of the Illinois-Purdue rivalry.
