Rally In Game Two Falls Just Short As Montana State Billings Gets Past Softball In Saturday DH - WOU Athletics

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Backed by four home runs, three in the fourth inning, the Western Oregon University softball team mounted a comeback in game two against Montana State Billings. The Yellowjackets, though, were able to hang on and claim the 8-7 win in game two, after winning the opener, 8-2, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Saturday at the WOU Softball Field.

Game two saw both teams put together big fourth innings. A leadoff homer by Skyler Jenkins started Montana State Billings (10-14, 4-2 GNAC) with the 1-0 lead.

WOU (13-14, 0-6 GNAC) answered in the second getting a leadoff homer of their own by Kirah McGlothan. The Wolves later took the lead when Logan Carlos singled just past the pitcher to plate Sophie Franklin who was hit-by-pitch earlier in the inning, to push WOU out to the 2-1 lead.

The Yellowjackets didn't wait long in regaining the lead as a three-run home run in the third by Jazlyn Kalehuawehe moved MSUB out to the 4-2 lead. The 'Jackets stretched the lead out to 8-2 with four more runs in the fourth. Another long ball helped provide a majority of the offense when Brittanee Fisher connected for a three-run shot to cap the inning.

WOU nearly came all the way back in the home half of the inning. Bella Valdes singled, just ahead of a towering drive over the left-center field fence by Carlos for a two-run homer and cut the deficit to four. Hannah Stewart reached on an error, just in time to come home on another round tripper, this time by Zoie Recolan, as she drilled a 0-1 pitch over the center field wall to move the Wolves within two. Natalie Willoughby kept the offense turning when she followed with a solo homer to right-center to pull WOU within one at 8-7. MSUB went to the bullpen and Julia Qualteri was able to get the final three outs to keep the score at 8-7 after four.

WOU threatened in the fifth. Kate Ronning and Valdes opened the inning drawing walks. After both moved up on a wild pitch, Qualteri was able to get a strikeout and foul out to first for two outs. A walk to Recolan followed before getting a groundout to second to keep the score at 8-7 after five.

Chelsea Smith kept the 'Jackets off the board in the sixth working around a pair of baserunners to get a pop out to short. The Wolves again threatened in the home half. Erica Soliz reached on an error and pinch-runner McKenzie Westphal moved to second on a wild pitch. After McGlothan walked, a fielder's choice play at third marked the first out. A groundout to third moved the runners up, before a groundout to short retired the side with MSUB still clinging to the 8-7 lead.

Down to their last at-bat, WOU had the first two outs recorded before Recolan walked to keep the game alive. Qualteri was able to again work around the traffic getting a groundout to third to end the game with MSUB taking game two at 8-7.

WOU held a 9-4 edge in hits and MSUB committed the only two errors. Carlos had another big game going 3-5 with three runs and a run scored. McGlothan and Valdes each added two hit games. Recolan drove in a pair of runs. In the circle, Smith went all seven innings and threw 162 pitches to end up with the loss (7-3), allowing the eight earned runs. She added 12 strikeouts with nine walks.

Four players all had a hit for MSUB, as three of their hits went for home runs. Fisher and Kalehuawehe led the way with three RBI games. In the circle, Jenna Kister started and went the first three innings, allowing seven runs (six earned). Qualteri went the final four innings to pick up the win (5-5), allowing no hits and no runs and worked around five walks, with three strikeouts.

In the opener, MSUB came out swinging in the first. After getting a run in on an RBI single down the left field line, a two-run homer by Fisher had the 'Jackets out to the 3-0 lead.

It stayed that way into the fourth when MSUB picked up an RBI double and then a three-run homer by Kilee Imada for the 7-0 lead. WOU responded in the home half. McGlothan walked to open the inning and moved to second on a single by Ronning. Franklin moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Soliz came through with the big hit when she doubled to right just out of the outstretched glove of the right fielder to leave MSUB with the 7-2 lead after four.

WOU had a pair of runners on in the sixth, getting a single from Franklin and walk from Valdes, before a strikeout and fly out ended the inning.

MSUB closed the scoring with an RBI double in the seventh. WOU tallied a single from Recolan in the seventh, but that was all with the 'Jackets taking game one by a score of 8-2.

The Yellowjackets held a 10-5 edge in hits and neither team committed an error. Five players had a hit for WOU, while Soliz drove in two runs. In the circle, Maddie Mayer went all seven innings to end up with the loss (4-5), allowing eight earned runs, along with five strikeouts while throwing 132 pitches.

Fisher had three hits and three RBI to pace MSUB. Allie Hughes added two hits. Imada drove in three runs. In the circle, Alyssa Etheridge went all seven innings for the win (4-4), allowing the two earned runs and worked around eight walks with five strikeouts while throwing 133 pitches.

WOU and MSUB will conclude their four-game series with another doubleheader tomorrow (Sunday) with a new start time of 10 a.m. at the WOU Softball Field.
