Georgetown Survives Longwood's Upset Bid with End-Game Rally, 91-83 - Longwood Athletics

FARMVILLE, Va. – It took a stronghold on their home floor in the closing minutes and a career-high 23 points from Collin Holloway, but Georgetown fought off a gritty Longwood team's upset bid to gut out a 91-83 win Tuesday night at Capital One Arena.

In a game that Longwood (4-4) cut to one possession five times in the final 11 minutes – despite playing without leading scorer Leslie Nkereuwem, out with an injury – Georgetown (3-3) made a series of rally-killing responses to survive, including a game-clinching three-pointer from Kaiden Rice with 24 seconds left that pushed a four-point lead to seven.

Rice's three-pointer punctuated an end-game surge for the Hoyas, who scored on their final eight possessions. Holloway, who played 17 minutes off the bench, scored 18 points in the second half and spearheaded that effort, which prevented the Lancers from stringing together more than five consecutive points after they cut Georgetown's lead to 67-66 with 6:56 to play.

Holloway and Rice combined to score 10 of Georgetown's final 17 points, with Holloway racking up four points and an assist and Rice hitting two three-pointers during that span.

"The guys understand we're right there," said Longwood head coach Griff Aldrich. "There's no disrespect in losing to Georgetown, obviously, on their home court in a close matchup. But at the same time, the moral victories are becoming old.

"The lesson that needs to be learned is it's about execution. It's about not fouling, staying down on shot fakes, which we didn't do in the second half and it really cost us. Those turned into either open shots or fouls. Twenty-six free throws in the second half, you're not going to win games doing that."

The defeat was Longwood's third straight that was within four points in the final four minutes, following a 62-61 buzzer-beating road loss at Old Dominion and a 64-53 loss to Western Carolina. Those narrow losses followed a three-game winning streak that had helped elevate Longwood to the top of the Big South leaderboards in scoring margin and scoring defense. Even in defeat, Longwood used that multi-headed attack to score the most points the Hoyas have allowed this season and their most allowed at home since a 97-94 overtime win against St. John's on Dec. 13, 2020.

Senior DeShaun Wade led that effort 21 points and five three-pointers for his fourth double-digit scoring outburst in his past five games. Isaiah Wilkins (14 points), Justin Hill (13) and Zac Watson (12) also scored in double figures, while Hill and fellow point guard Jordan Perkins orchestrated an up-tempo offensive effort that produced 17 points in transition.

"We knew they liked to run and they like to shoot three-pointers," said Georgetown head coach Patrick Ewing. "We gave up way too many points on fast break. We have to do a much better on getting back and matching up. What helps you to stop the other team is scoring. We scored a little better in the second half, and that helped us."

Georgetown's improved shooting in the second half did just that, as the Hoyas improved their .419 (13-of-31) field goal clip in the first half to a .483 (14-of-29) performance after halftime. Along with Holloway's 23, Rice and Aminu Mohammed scored 15 apiece, Dante Harris added 14, and Donald Carey chipped in 12.

Now with the Lancers' two-game road trip complete, they will return to Willett Hall this Saturday to face Delaware State in the start of another three-game homestand, which also features matchups against Morgan State on Dec. 11 and Carolina University on Dec. 14.

"We'll get home early tomorrow and turn our attention to Delaware State pretty quickly," Aldrich said. "We'll give the guys a week between games for exams so they can finish up their first semester, but that will also give us a couple days where we can get back to practicing us and focusing on us. We need to do that. We've played a bunch of games here, now eight in the month of November, so we have to get back to doing what we do."
