KINGSVILLE/LAREDO, Texas – It has certainly been a strong start to the 2021-22 season for the Western Oregon University women's basketball team. The Wolves, riding a three-game winning streak, will travel to Texas this week to face Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday (12 p.m. Pacific) and then to Texas A&M-International on Friday (2 p.m. Pacific).
WOU (3-1) is off to their best start to a season since the 2017-18 year when the Wolves started out 5-0. Following a tough season-opening loss to nationally-ranked Hawaii Pacific, WOU picked up a 33-point win at Willamette, a big eight-point regional win over Chico State, the first in program history against the Wildcats and then rolled to a 25-point victory for another regional tally against Sonoma State.
On the season, the Wolves average 70.5 points, shooting 110-232 (47.4) from the field, 19-61 (31.1) from three and 43-63 (68.3) from the foul line. They average 41.8 rebounds, 15 assists, 5.5 steals and a sizable 7.5 blocks per game. Opponents average 60 points, shooting 83-248 (33.5) from the field, 22-74 (29.7) from three and 52-77 (67.5) from the foul line. In addition, opponents average 32.3 rebounds, 11.3 assists, 7.8 steals and 1.5 blocks per game.
Meadow Aragon is off to a huge start to the new season leading the team in points (14.8), rebounds 8.5), blocks (16), field goals (24) and free throws (10). She is shooting 64.9 percent (24-37) from the field and already has a double-double this season with 16 points and 14 rebounds in the win over Chico State. Aragon is currently on a stretch of three straight games with five blocks and has averaged in double-figures in scoring all four games. Aragon enters the week second nationally in both blocked shots per game (4.0) and overall blocks (16), while checking in 23rd nationally in field goal percentage (64.9). She also ranks in the top-100 nationally in total rebounds coming in 83rd (34).
Cali McClave is second on the team in scoring at nine points per game, making 13 field goals, four three-pointers and also has six assists, three steals and three blocks. Kaelin Williams-Kennedy averages eight points per game, shooting 50 percent from the field. Tresai McCarver and Ana McClave each average over seven points per game with McCarver at 7.8 points and Ana McClave at 7.3. McCarver leads the team in assists with 16 and has four steals, while Ana McClave is shooting over 55 percent from the field and leads the team with five three-pointers. She is also second on the team in rebounding at 4.5 per game. McCarver ranks 78th nationally in assists (16) and 90th in assists per game (4.0).
As a team, WOU ranks high nationally in several categories including 78th in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.92), 50th in assists (60), 69th in assists per game (15), third in blocked shots (30), fourth in blocked shots per game (7.5), 20th in defensive rebounds per game (31.8), 18th in field goal percentage (47.4), 39th in field goal percentage defense (33.5), 39th in rebound margin (9.5), 57th in rebounds (167), 76th in rebounds per game (41.8), 89th in scoring defense (60), 74th in scoring margin (10.5) and 67th in winning percentage (75). In the GNAC, WOU ranks in the top-three in multiple categories leading in blocked shots, blocked shots per game, defensive rebounds per game, and rebounds per game. WOU is second in field goal percentage, and field goal percentage defense. The Wolves are third in free throws made (43), and in turnovers per game (16.2).
First up, WOU will travel to Kingsville to face the Javelinas on Wednesday. This will be the first meeting between the teams. Texas A&M-Kingsville is 2-1 on the season having picked up wins over Chadron State and UC Colorado Springs. They lost by six to MSU Denver. The only home game of that group was against Chadron State on Nov. 12. TAMUK enters the week averaging 53.7 points, shooting 60-155 (38.7) from the field, 20-61 (32.8) from three and 21-35 (60) from the foul line. The Javelinas average 29.7 rebounds, 11 assists, 10 steals and 0.3 blocks per game. Opponents average 52.7 points, shooting 61-150 (40.7) from the field, 11-50 (22) from three and 25-37 (67.6) from the foul line. Opponents also average 34.7 rebounds, 11.7 assists, eight steals and two blocks per game.
Individually, Jayde Tschritter leads the team averaging 10 points per game and has five steals. Georgia Ohiaeri and Mia Rivers add 8.7 points per game and Rivers leads the team in assists with 11. Anastacia Mickens leads the team in rebounds at 4.3 per game.
To close the trip, WOU will face Texas A&M-International in Laredo on Friday afternoon. The teams played for the first time back in 2019-20 when the Dustdevils traveled to Monmouth and claimed the 51-42 victory. TAMIU is 2-0 this season picking up wins over Chadron State and New Mexico Highlands, both at home. They will face Saint Martin's on Thanksgiving before hosting the Wolves the next day.
On the season, the Dustdevils average 79.5 points, shooting 55-122 (45.1) from the field, 11-45 (24.4) from three and 38-69 (55.1) from the foul line. TAMIU also averages 41 rebounds, 20.5 assists, 13 steals and 2.5 blocks per game. Opponents average 62.5 points, shooting 39-107 (36.4) from the field, 12-45 (26.7) from three and 35-56 (62.5) from the foul line. Opponents also average 28.5 rebounds, 12.5 assists, 12 steals and two blocks per game.
Individually, Rai Brown leads the team averaging 21 points per game, shooting over 60 percent from the field and adds 5.5 rebounds and six steals. Emily Swiercz is averaging 14.5 points and has five assists and five steals, while Clara Fernandez gives the team three averaging in double-figures in scoring at 10 points and has a team-high nine rebounds and eight assists.
