Pregame Reading

So, here it is. Two universities named for 19th-century railroad barons will at long last meet on the football field as the Cardinal of Leland Stanford Junior University come to Vanderbilt Stadium for tonight’s matchup with our Vanderbilt Commodores.

Like Vanderbilt, Stanford looked extremely shaky in Week 1 in a 24-7 loss to Kansas State (which is the same as a 23-3 loss to ETSU, don’t question me on this) before recovering to win in Week 2. In Stanford’s case, it was a blasting of USC that wasn’t as close as the 42-28 final score looks: the Cardinal had the Trojans down 42-13 in the fourth quarter before USC scored a couple of garbage time touchdowns to make the final score look respectable. Making the final score look respectable, of course, was not enough to save Clay Helton’s job; the seventh-year USC head coach was relieved of his duties a day later.

Vanderbilt gained some confidence back after a 24-21 win at Colorado State. This is the third consecutive night game to open the season for the Commodores; I, with two babies under a year old at home, am definitely not liking the late finishes.

Vanderbilt opened up as a 9-point underdog and as I’m writing this up mid-afternoon on Saturday, that line is anywhere from 12.5 to 13.5 depending on which book you’re at. For what it’s worth, Jeff Sagarin’s computer thinks this should be about an 18-point line.

Have fun, expect to win, Anchor Down.

Adblock test (Why?)
