MINNEAPOLIS -- Saturday's scheduled matchup between Minnesota and Cleveland at Target Field was postponed due to rain in the area expected to last throughout the afternoon and into the evening.
The contest will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Sept. 14, with the first game scheduled for 1:10 p.m. CT and the nightcap expected to begin at 6:40 p.m. CT. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli had indicated Saturday morning that the teams did not anticipate making up any rescheduled game on Sunday, when the teams are slated to meet for the finale of the series.
Fans who purchased tickets directly from the Twins will be able to redeem their tickets for the rescheduled contest or exchange them for tickets to any future regular-season home game in 2021, subject to availability. All ticket exchanges must be made at least 24 hours before the rescheduled game. Fans who purchased tickets through secondary ticket resellers will only have their tickets honored for the rescheduled game.
In a way, the rainout helped both teams with their pitching plans in the immediate future, as Cleveland will push Minnesota native Sam Hentges to Sunday, meaning it will no longer need to call up Logan Allen to start. Meanwhile, the Twins will keep J.A. Happ in line to pitch Sunday's finale and push Kenta Maeda -- Saturday's originally scheduled starter -- to Monday's opener against the White Sox.
"The Indians are a little more left-handed-heavy, fairly straightforward stuff," Baldelli said of the decision to keep Happ for Sunday. "Nothing kind of beyond that. Any time, too, we can get Kenta a night game, I think there's a slight preference, maybe, for throwing in some of these night games. ... But more than anything else, just the teams we're matching up against right now. They're very different."
The Twins originally had an opening to fill in their rotation on Wednesday due to Randy Dobnak's recent middle finger injury, but both Minnesota and Cleveland will now be able to push their pitching uncertainties to Thursday.
Bailey Ober and José Berríos will each be pushed back a day to start on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
Beyond this series, Cleveland is next scheduled to be in town for three games between Aug. 16-18. The Indians will then return to Minnesota for what will now be a three-game set from Sept. 14-15. Both teams had been scheduled for off-days on Sept. 13 and Sept. 16, on each side of that series, but they elected to schedule a doubleheader instead of sacrificing one of the off-days.
"I think both teams had the preference for playing in September, but we had to work through that first with Major League Baseball," Baldelli said. "I do think that when you do have to add another game into the mix, instead of burning an off-day, adding the two seven-inning games can be OK. And the fact that we have those off-days surrounding that series does make it a lot easier to get back on track as far as our starting pitchers."
