The NFL will be adding an 18th week and a 17th game to their regular schedule beginning this upcoming season. It will end the era of the 16-game schedule, which began in 1978.

Before 1978, the league played a 14-game regular season which began in 1961. Before that, the league expanded to a 12-game schedule from 10 games beginning with the 1947 season.

The New York Giants have been around for all of it, but since the 16-game schedule began the Giants have been, well, average. Their record between 1978-2020 was 340-338-2 (.501). That is good enough for 16th in the NFL over that period, seven though they qualified for five Super Bowls and won four during that era.

Between 1978 and 2020, the Giants had 20 losing seasons, 19 winning seasons (with 16 postseason appearances) and four years in which they finished at 8-8.
