The Game
2020 may now (finally) be behind us, but the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers still have 2020 business to conclude: their Week 17 contest at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:25 p.m. Sunday. The game will be broadcast on FOX — locally on WDAF/4.
The Chiefs enter the game with a 14-1 record, having already clinched their fifth-straight AFC West title and the first seed of the AFC playoffs. They’ve won 10 consecutive games — one short for the longest regular-season streak in team history. In Week 16, they defeated the Atlanta Falcons 17-14 at Arrowhead.
The Chargers — now 6-9 — currently occupy third place in the AFC West. They’ve won their last three games — most recently a 19-16 home victory over the Denver Broncos.
Since the game will have no postseason implications, the Chiefs will start backup quarterback Chad Henne in place of current MVP candidate Patrick Mahomes; many other Kansas City offensive and defensive starters are also expected to give way to reserve players. The former Miami Dolphins starter is now in his 11th NFL season — his third with the Chiefs — and will be making his first start since September 2014, when he was playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Chargers offense will be led by quarterback Justin Herbert, who was selected out of Oregon in the first round (sixth overall) of last spring’s NFL Draft. Expected to spend most of the season behind tenth-year veteran Tyrod Taylor, Herbert ended up making his professional debut against the Chiefs in Week 2 after Taylor became unable to play; the veteran quarterback’s lung had been accidentally punctured while he was receiving a routine pregame medical treatment. Since then, Herbert has started all of the Chargers’ games, completing 66.3% of his passes for 4,034 yards, 28 touchdowns and five interceptions — good for a passer rating of 96.3.
But Herbert will be without at least one of his key targets. On Thursday, wide receiver Keenan Allen was placed on the Chargers’ reserve/COVID list after reportedly testing positive for the novel coronavirus. Now with 992 yards and eight touchdowns on the year, he will miss the opportunity to notch his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard season.
