Herbers, a junior right-hander, struck out three and surrendered just two hits in the quality outing. Willman went 2 for 3, including a two-run home run in the sixth inning of the seven-inning intrasquad exhibition. Dylan Phillips also went 2 for 3, scoring twice while throwing a perfect 1 1/3 innings to close the game, picking up a pair of strikeouts.
"Great pitching and timely hitting, but we played infield defense at a really high level," head coach Pete Hughes said. "When you can do that, your pitchers have a whole lot more confidence to throw the ball in the zone. I think our infield defense and our pitchers pounding the zone fed off each other today. As a coach, I'm looking at strikes thrown, command of the baseball and defense. And I thought we did that at a high level today.
"Good to see some of our older guys like Kamron Willman get some big hits. Dylan Phillips was awesome at the plate and then on the mound to close it out – it was really, really good stuff. The energy level was awesome, as it always is in our program. We look forward to two more competitive games."
Herbers, along with Team Purple starter Luke Hauswirth, combined to keep the game without a hit through the first three innings. Hauswirth retired nine of the first 10 hitters he faced and would go on to strike out four batters over 4 1/3 frames, with two runs allowed on three hits.
Grey got on the board in the fourth inning, when Phillips led off with a single and later scored on Willman's RBI single. Caleb Littlejim roped a single down the right field line to bring home Willman, and Team Grey opened a 2-0 lead.
Willman's homer to left center in the sixth followed Phillips' second base hit of the game and doubled the lead. Herbers and Phillips combined to strike out five hitters while allowing two hits and a walk.
Daniel Carinci registered Team Purple's first base hit, a leadoff double in the fourth. Freshman Brady Day singled in the seventh.
Eric Torres, who relieved Hauswirth, threw 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on two hits with one strikeout.
