With the owners having declined to respond to the players’ 70-game counterproposal, the players will reportedly vote tomorrow on whether to reject the 60-game proposal.
No one expects that deal to be accepted.
The #MLBPA executive board, consisting of an 8-member subcommittee and 30 team representatives, are meeting today but there will be no vote taken on the #MLB 60-game proposal. That vote will likely be Sunday.

Here’s why some players plan to vote no on MLB’s 60-game framework/proposal: They believe expanded playoffs for 2 years and dropping their grievance chance is worth more than 60 games, even 60 prorated games. No decision has been made yet but it is expected sometime this weekend.

Commissioner Manfred will be in touch w/owners throughout weekend. Expectation is that if players reject last try he will soon set schedule pursuant to March 26 deal; appetite for canceling season seems low (though there’s small “hardline” group). Bigger threat to year: Covid-19

Tomorrow for the vote, eh? So 24 hours for the owners to consider adjusting their offer – in games, in other payouts, etc. – to a level where the players are willing to give up their right to a grievance, to expand the postseason for two years, and to allow uniform ads, among other revenue-generators/cost-savers for the owners.
Rational thinking:
Splitting the baby at 65-ish games would cost the owners an additional $150M ($5M per team).
And if doing so spurred an agreement, it would net the owners: expanded playoffs ($100M each year?), no grievance risk ($200M?), uniform ads ($100M?), etc.

It feels so very obvious that there’s gotta be middle ground here that avoids a mandated season and all the ugliness that follows, but anyone with optimism left is totally unrecognizable to me. I expect a rejection of the 60-game offer, then a mandated season, and then probably some exceptionally ugly fighting on the health and safety protocols (remember those?).
And, even if things do get together to start the season, a reminder of what this process has wrought:
⇒ Much fewer games for the fans.
⇒ Much less money for the players.
⇒ Much less positive exposure for the sport.
⇒ Much more fan antipathy about the return.
⇒ Much more player hostility going forward.
⇒ Possibly fewer players actually participating.
⇒ Definitely fewer player-involved extra activities.
⇒ No expanded playoffs.
⇒ Likely even bigger fight about post-2021 CBA than already expected.
