Kentucky Route Zero is ending, and your old saved game is important - Polygon

Kentucky Route Zero is an episodic video game more than seven years in the making; the final act will be released on Jan. 28. For those who have been playing the game intermittently since it was released way back in 2013, that presents a bit of a problem with continuity. Frankly, I can’t remember where I left my glasses from day to day let alone where I left my save game files. But, if you can track them down, you can easily move them over to this new version of the game pretty easily.

Prior to its fourth act, released back in July 2016, Kentucky Route Zero only had a single save slot. If you boot the game up now you’ll find it has three, numbered zero through two. If you played it on Steam, be aware that it doesn’t make use of Steam Cloud, which archives saved games. The same goes for the version available via GOG and Itch.io. Nevertheless, there is a save file. According to co-creator Jake Elliott, you can safely move it between any version of the game on Linux, Mac and Windows PC and pick up right where you left off.

“Old save files should be 100% compatible with the final game,” Elliott wrote Polygon in an email. “They’re just xml files really & can be used cross-platform [...] The earlier episodes haven’t changed except for bug fixes, localizations, and other technical improvements.”

That means the hardest part of getting to your old saves will likely be booting up your old computer. If you can manage to breathe life into the old beast the files you want will be inside your documents folder, under KentuckyRouteZero. They’re named “save.krz”, “save-1.krz”, and “save-2.krz” respectively. Just cut and paste those into the same folder on your platform of choice.

Of course, this workaround isn’t available for all versions of the game. Those playing on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One — brand-new versions that also launch on Jan. 28 — are going to need to start fresh.
