Jimmy Garoppolo shows he's no 'game manager' in win over Cardinals - SF Gate

A little too much has been made of Jimmy Garoppolo's modest numbers during the San Francisco 49ers' 7-0 start to the 2019 season, and it's almost like the quarterback heard some of his critics during the 49ers' 28-25 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night.

Garoppolo has been aided by a strong running game and dominant defense so far this year, but that wasn't the case Thursday as the running game struggled to gain traction in the first quarter and late in the second half, and a usually stout 49ers defense gave up 25 points, including a late 88-yard touchdown that brought the Cardinals within three points late in the fourth quarter.

How did Garoppolo — who had already thrown a career-high four touchdown passes up to that point — respond to the sudden Arizona surge? By completing two huge third-down passes on the 49ers' ensuing drive to run out the clock and put the game away.

The first was an impressive connection to Emmanuel Sanders on 3rd and 11, with Garoppolo facing heavy pressure in the pocket. Sanders wasn't particularly open, but Garoppolo found a soft spot in the defense.

The second conversion came on a 3rd and 9 out of the two-minute warning, when Garoppolo navigated his way through the pocket and found reserve tight end Ross Dwelley to put the game away.

Garoppolo completed 28 of 37 passes for 317 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. It was a pretty solid showing for a "game manager" getting carried by the rest of his team.

Also turning in an impressive performance was newly-acquired receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who caught seven passes for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Sanders and Garoppolo connected on a number of big plays down the field, including one particularly impressive third-down conversion where the quarterback got rid of the ball just as the receiver was getting out of his break. The ball was there as soon as Sanders turned around, and Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson was left in disbelief.

Tight end George Kittle exited with an apparent knee injury on the game's first play, but returned to catch six passes for 79 yards. One catch was one for the highlight reel, as Kittle broke tackles and delivered a stiff arm for a touchdown.

The 8-0 49ers now have a mini-bye week of sorts, as they don't play again until Nov. 11 against the 6-2 Seahawks on Monday Night Football.
