Game notes: Kenta Maeda is coming off his best start of the year, although manager A.J. Hinch and the Tigers medical staff only let him finish four innings against the Washington Nationals.

Maeda has struggled a lot this year and things went from bad to worse when he had to leave a game on June 5 against the Texas Rangers when he was holding his side and appeared to be in pain after just two pitches. It looked like Maeda was heading for a trip to the injured list, but he ended up being fine and didn't miss a start. Maeda was frustrated when he was pulled from the game, but later said he understood the decision and said it was for the best.

Fast forward to Maeda's last start against the Nationals, and some of those frustrations reared their ugly head again when there was some type of incident between Hinch and Maeda when he was pulled from the game after completing just four innings.

Tigers pitcher Kenta Maeda reacts after Nationals left fielder Jesse Winker walks and third baseman Nick Senzel scores during the top of the third inning on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at Comerica Park.

Maeda had allowed just one hit and one run at the time but because of the four walks, his pitch count was at 77. With the Tigers trying to be careful, Maeda was pulled from the game.

Now, Maeda will try to continue building on what he was doing before the cautious approach took him out of the game against the Nationals as the Tigers try to win their series against the Astros.

After the game Sunday, the Tigers will head to Georgia to face the Atlanta Braves for the start of a new series Monday.
