The Detroit Lions will be one of the first teams to open the preseason this summer.
On Tuesday, the Lions announced dates and times for their three preseason games, and their exhibition opener will be Friday, Aug. 8, at the New York Giants.
The Houston Texans and Chicago Bears open the preseason Aug. 1 in the Hall-of-Fame game, but most teams debut Aug. 10-11.
Currently, there is one preseason game scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 7, and the Lions-Giants game (7 p.m.) is one of four set for the next day.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said in March his team would travel to New York for joint practices before their exhibition opener, after hosting the Giants for joint workouts last year.
The Lions play the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2 of the preseason, at 4 p.m. Aug. 17 at Arrowhead Stadium, and they host the Pittsburgh Steelers in their preseason finale at 1 p.m. Aug. 24.
Campbell said he hoped to do a second set of joint practices with the Lions’ second preseason opponent, but the Chiefs historically have not taken part in joint practices under head coach Andy Reid.

“I’ve just never been that big on that,” Reid said in 2014, according to ArrowheadPride.com. “A lot of teams do it. A lot of successful teams do it. I really don’t want to give anybody anything that I don’t have to give.”
The Lions open the regular season Sept. 8 against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football at Ford Field.
