Fallout Shelter Is Still A Good Game

It's Hard To Argue With The Price

Fallout Shelter vault with mulitple levels and rooms

There are quite a few things that work in Fallout Shelter’s favor, with one of the main factors being that it is completely free to play. Although there are microtransactions in-game, all are completely optional, and it is possible to game and succeed in the game without ever spending a penny. From its humble and basic beginning, much more content has been added to Fallout Shelter since its release, making it tons of fun to play.

How To Play Fallout Shelter

The Simple Gameplay Is Enhanced By Objectives & Quests

The idea behind Fallout Shelter is a simple one. The player is a Vault-Tec Overseer who must build & oversee a vault just like in Fallout 4. The basic gameplay is that of resource management, with the vault dwellers needing power, food, and water to survive. Different rooms in the vault will provide either resources or the ability to train the dwellers in various skills based on Fallout’s S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes.

Dwellers with higher stats in specific attributes are better suited to specific tasks, for example dwellers with high Strength will help increase productivity in power rooms whereas dwellers with high Agility are better working in the cafeterias creating food. To begin with, a limited number of rooms are available, and more unlocking is needed as the vault population increases. The maximum number of dwellers a vault can hold is 200, which may not sound like a lot but it is more than enough to keep any prospective Overseers busy.

It is a good idea to get enough dwellers to unlock the training rooms, then stopping any further breeding until the current dwellers have maxed their S.P.E.C.I.A.L.stats. This will prevent the vault from expanding too quickly and creating resource issues.

There are five vaults to find and explore in Fallout 4, with two more within additional DLCs. Unlock and enter them to uncover Vault-Tec's secrets.

As the vault expands the Overseer’s office will unlock allowing vault dwellers to be sent on quests. These are a great way to get new weapons, outfits, and useful junk for crafting, as well as recipes for weapons, armor, and themes. There are some really fun stories tied to these quests, with the classic Fallout sense of humor running through the whole game.

To keep the vault running successfully, the three main resources need to be kept high, along with dweller happiness. Each day. the vault will be graded on the happiness of its dwellers, with production bonuses the happier they are. Alongside the resource management and Overseer quests, there are smaller objectives that can be completed to earn the caps needed to buy new rooms, as well as Vault-Tec lunchboxes that contain useful items.

Fallout Shelter Is More Laid-Back Fallout Entry

Dip In And Out To Pass The Time Until Fallout 5

Fallout Shelter quest team featuring two characters from Fallout 3

Fallout Shelter is definitely still worth playing in 2024, with new content still being added to the free-to-play game. Although Fallout Shelter adds no lore to the overall universe, it does contain lots of Easter eggs from previous Fallout titles with characters returning from Fallout 3, New Vegas and Fallout 4 making appearances as dwellers who can join the player vault. More recently, Fallout Shelter added Lucy, The Ghoul, and Maximus from the TV series, along with fun quests to recruit them.

Ultimately Fallout Shelter is very much an idle game that benefits from quick dips of game time. Vaults and dwellers are saved and safe while the game is offline, meaning no progress is lost between sessions. The simple gameplay can be further enhanced with fun self-set challenges such as single-gender vaults, themed vaults, or naming each generation based on the alphabet in the spirit of Vault-Tec’s experiments.

Given the current swell in interest in all things Fallout the latest updates to this idle simulation game may be just the beginning. With a still thriving community where many tips and tricks can be found, Fallout Shelter is a fun and relaxing way to dip into the Fallout universe. And with the prospect of no new Fallout games on the horizon for some time, Fallout Shelter is a great alternative to larger games such as Fallout 76 or Fallout 4.
