New Pokémon TCG Game Already Has One Major Problem - Screen Rant

Summary

  • Players in Pokémon TCG Pocket will get two free boosters daily, offering a chance to get rare cards.
  • TCG Pocket features exclusive cards with unique artwork and battles somewhat similar to the TCG rulebook.
  • The announcement of TCG Pocket, however, comes with problems of its own, even before the official release.

Pokémon TCG Pocket, the new Trading Card Game in the franchise, has only just been announced, and it is already met with a huge problem ahead of its release. TCG Pocket was one of the announcements featured during the special Pokémon Presents broadcast scheduled for 2024’s Pokémon Day. The event brought forth all the new additions to several of its existing games, including Pokémon GO, Masters EX, Unite, and more. Aside from the significant updates to these titles, Nintendo also revealed two upcoming games. The most notable one is the new Pokémon Legends game, set in a rather unexpected region.

While Pokémon Legends Z-A and its release at some point in 2025 were the big new reveals featured in the celebratory Pokémon Presents, the event was also where Pokémon TCG Pocket was announced. This is a new mobile title related to the Trading Card Game, where the main focus is collecting cards by opening boosters and trading them with friends. There will also be a battle function available in the app once it is released. The game is set to arrive in 2024 for iOS and Android devices, though a more specific release window has not yet been provided.

Pokémon TCG Pocket Players Get 2 Free Boosters Per Day

According to the information in the reveal trailer for the game, which can be seen on the official Pokémon channel on YouTube, players will receive a total of two free card boosters per day. This will, in essence, offer them several cards for free and a chance of getting rare cards when opening them. It is uncertain if these boosters will follow the standard Pokémon TCG regulation and feature 10 cards or if these will be different, with fewer or more cards to claim. From the design featured in the trailer, the Pokémon TCG Pocket boosters will look somewhat different.

Pokémon TCG Pocket Features Exclusive Cards & Battles

A Pikachu ex card attacks in Pokemon TCG Pocket.

As was revealed in the trailer and on the official Pokémon TCG Pocket website, the digital cards collected by players will be composed of already existing units in the official Trading Card Game, as well as cards that are exclusive to Pokémon TCG Pocket. This means that some of the cards obtained on the new mobile app will be impossible to obtain in their physical forms or in Pokémon TCG Live. Some of these exclusive cards will have special and expansive artwork that goes beyond what is shown in the card’s frame itself.

An example of such a card was shown in the official reveal trailer.

In the video, players can see an “immersive” Pikachu ex card. When clicked upon, the app will zoom into the artwork and reveal other parts that are not present on the card. This includes more Pokémon, like an additional Pikachu, some Ponyta, and even a Caterpie. These are expected to be some of the most special and rarest cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket. In addition to the collecting aspect of the mobile app, the new game will also feature “quick battles in which players can challenge one another with the cards they have.

These battles seem to follow the same rules as the ones existent in the standard Pokémon Trading Card Game rulebook, but that has yet to be confirmed by Nintendo. In the trailer, a Pikachu ex card is shown attacking a Snorlax and knocking it out. The regular six Prize Cards are absent from the board and seem to have been swapped out for a new three-knockout mechanic highlighted on the bottom portion of the app’s screen. Little else is known about the battle mechanics in Pokémon TCG Pocket, but it seems to be a shorter version of regular matches.

Pokémon TCG Pocket Conflicts With Pokémon TCG Live

People look at a special Lapras card in Pokemon TCG Pocket

The big problem with the announcement of the Pokémon TCG Pocket app is that it seems to conflict with the very nature of Pokémon TCG Live, another mobile app that focuses on collecting TCG cards and using them in battles. TCG Live is not too focused on the social aspect, but things like that could easily be incorporated into it rather than implemented into an entirely new product. With the arrival of TCG Pocket, dedicated fans may end up having to invest time and resources into two fairly similar products instead of a single one.

The presence of exclusive cards in the new app also seems somewhat strange. While they offer a fun new perspective into the artwork effort of the cards, they are not very practical when it comes to the competitive aspect. If there are cards that are exclusive to Pokémon TCG Pocket, they will never see the light of day in physical form for official TCG matches, which seems like a tease. They may be permitted exclusively in in-game matches, but there is an awkwardness surrounding their very existence as non-official cards.

Additionally, the battles offered in the new game may not be different enough to set itself apart from the matches provided by Pokémon TCG Live. Surely, the concept behind the new design is providing quicker battles, but with that, players may rely more on randomness than on actual deck-building and strategy, which goes against the very nature of TCG. Of course, few details were provided with the announcement, so there is a chance that Pokémon TCG Pocket will come around and set itself apart from Pokémon TCG Live with enough differences to make players want to engage in both apps.
