The world of video games is expanding in every possible way. This doesn't just include indie titles or expensive AAA games. There are more free-to-play options than ever before for more money-conscious gamers. However, some still require a significant early investment in the form of a high-end computer.
This isn't universal, however. Gamers have plenty of options for free games that run perfectly well on hardware most people have already available to them. These games might be older, deliberately less intensive than other titles, or a combination thereof. They cover various genres and playstyles, ensuring all gamers run free games on low-end PCs.
Updated by Sage Ashford on February 21st 2024: This list has been updated to add more free-to-play PC games for low-end PCs, as well as to adhere to CBR's most recent standards in formatting.

By now, everyone’s aware of Roblox as one of a handful of casual games that kids everywhere play. It’s a brilliant title though, because it isn’t just a game, but it also offers “Roblox Studio” for players to build their own games, then allow other people to play them. Literally millions of games are developed within Roblox a year, a testament to the game’s ridiculous level of popularity.
While there’s tons of things players can do within Roblox though, the minimum specs aren’t actually that high. GWENT is one of the rare cases of a mini-game becoming so popular the developer decides to turn it into its own game. CDProjektRED expanded GWENT into a full PvP game, so fans of The Witcher can build decks based around their favorite characters and world. Plus, just like in The Witcher 3 they didn’t skimp on the effects, with powerful cards creating beautiful visual effects once they hit the field.
That said, GWENT isn’t a very demanding game for players. Even the game’s recommended specs only require a Core i3 CPU, plus most integrated cards can run this title just fine. Since CDProjekt is busy making the next Witcher, the developer has moved on from updating this game, but there are still balance changes available thanks to the community’s Balance Council.

The monetization for this game can get a little frustrating, but there aren’t many racing titles available for free and this stands at the top of it.
Meanwhile, originally intended for mobile, Asphalt 9: Legends can run on the vast majority of PCs out there. Anyone with a Core i3 CPU and 4GBs of RAM is going to be fine, as the minimum specs only require an integrated card. Even the recommended specs will be completely doable for the average PC owner.

The hero shooter genre is infamously high-end, needing powerful computers to keep pace with its high-speed and graphics-intensive action. Team Fortress 2 breaks from this norm, not least due to being over a decade old. Team Fortress 2 lets asymmetric teams of players go head-to-head in explosive, wacky military action that requires plenty of skill.
Despite its very low requirements, Team Fortress 2 isn't an underwhelming title. Many prefer it to later hero shooters like Overwatch and Valorant for its freedom of builds, immense humor, and high-octane gameplay. It doesn't sacrifice quality for playability at all. Almost any gamer with a PC can run Team Fortress 2 and enjoy one of the best multiplayer shooters ever made.
