Game Recap: Cavs at Wizards - NBA.com

*** After dropping the first two games after the break, the Wine & Gold righted the ship on Sunday night in D.C., although it wasn’t easy. J.B. Bickerstaff | Cavs at Wizards Post Game | 2.25.2024

*** Coach J.B. Bickerstaff was brutally honest after the victory. “I thought we defended well when we needed to. Again, I thought we just need to be better. I don't think we played to our standard tonight. I expected more fire from our group after losing two games in a row and having an opportunity to play another one. We've got to get back to playing with that spirit the way we played before the Break. We’ve got some tough stretches coming up here, but we've got to be better. I've got to do a better job of getting guys ready to play and our players have to do a better job as well.”

*** After a two-game absence, Donovan Mitchell made his return to the lineup on Sunday, and although he had a quiet night – 16 points on 4-of-10 shooting – but the offense purred again for much of the night. As a team, the Cavs handed out 35 assists on 42 made baskets, scored 60 points in the paint and five players handed out at least five assists in the win.

*** Jarrett Allen tallied his 27th double-double of the season on Sunday – leading Cleveland with 22 points and a game-high-tying 12 rebounds, going 11-for-18 from the floor, adding five assists and a block. J.A., who’s averaging a career-best 2.7apg this year, posted his eighth game with at least five assists.

*** Caris LeVert shook out of a mini-funk after the Break – going 3-for-21 in the first two games – to barely miss a triple-double in Sunday’s win over Washington, finishing with 18 points on 6-for-10 shooting to go with a season-high 12 boards and a team-best eight assists. LeVert is averaging 13.8ppg off the bench this year, tied for 2nd-best in the Eastern Conference.

*** LeVert talked postgame about on Sunday’s win over Washington. “I think that's what the good teams do – they find a way playing good, playing bad and still finding a way to win. And I think our defense got better in the fourth quarter. There were still holes in it, still possessions where we could have been better, could have talked better. But all in all, we got the win.”

*** Evan Mobley was outstanding on both ends in the win, finishing with 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting, adding six boards and five blocked shots – three more than the Wizards as a team. In two games against Washington this year, Mobley is shooting 18-of-21 from the floor.

*** Darius Garland had another solid night, finishing with 17 points and seven assists to lead Cleveland’s starters, adding a pair of boards and a steal while posting a game-high plus-22 in 33 minutes of work.

*** After holding off the stubborn Wizards on Sunday night, the Wine & Gold’s busy schedule continues this week – coming home for a Tuesday night showdown against Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving and the Mavericks before getting back on the road for two. On Wednesday, it’s off to Chicago for a battle with the Bulls followed by a Friday night showdown in Detroit.
