Todd Howard Says ‘Starfield’ Has A ‘Unique Twist’ On A New Game Plus Mode - Forbes

Bethesda games, sprawling as they may be, are not known for having “New Game Plus” modes, a somewhat recent practice in games where you can start a game over, but keep some level of your progress from the original playthrough. Sometimes that means levels and skills, or weapons and gear. When you start over Bethesda games like Skyrim and Fallout, you are just making a brand new character and save file because they don’t have New Game Plus. But Starfield actually has it, according to Todd Howard.

Howard, speaking to GQ, confirmed the mode’s existence outside the usual “new save” format of most big Bethesda games. And he says it’s different than other games that use this mode, somehow:

"Starfield delivers [Bethesda’s] most immersive role-playing since 2006's Oblivion. It gives you the flexibility and options to carve out a unique identity, and even adds a unique and exciting twist on New Game+ to incentivize continued and repeat play."

Howard is not saying what carries over between the normal game and New Game Plus, between skills or weapons or ships or whatever, and players will not know until launch.

It’s an interesting notion for a game with 1,000 planets and heralded as having close to unlimited exploration and playtime. Some may ask why you want to start over when there’s so much out there to explore? But the “unique” spin may explain that.

New Game Plus modes are generally well-received by players. They bridge the gap between wanting to replay something you liked, but also not throwing away all your progress as you do so. We often see New Game Plus modes patched into games after release if they don’t launch with one, so they’re a pretty in-demand feature. Starfield is launching with one from the get-go, which seems to have pleased most fans. We’ll see if Todd has anything more to say about it before launch.

This is one of those times where it’s hard to cover Starfield news stories while playing my review copy at the same time because there is a whole lot I want to say about this specific aspect of the game, but I won’t be able to for another week. I will talk about it later, though probably not right at launch, lest it be considered spoilers.

More Starfield news to come as Bethesda gives out more bits and pieces and uh, naughty people leak things before embargo. Lots of actual coverage to come a week from now.
