NC State football’s Rakeim Ashford was injured and carried off the field on a stretcher in the third quarter of the Wolfpack's game against UConn on Thursday night.
Ashford, a backup defensive back, was injured on a kickoff return play with NC State leading 17-14 at the 1:54 mark of the third quarter. The graduate student was among the Wolfpack's top special teams players last season, playing 145 snaps in 2022.
The game was delayed for nearly 20 minutes as medical personnel attended to Ashford, who was surrounded by his Wolfpack teammates and gave a thumbs up as he was stretchered off the field. CBS Sports Network reported Ashford had movement in his extremities.
He had a season-ending injury in 2020 and went into the 2021 season coming off shoulder surgery.
Following the injury delay, NC State responded with a touchdown drive to extend its lead to 24-14 on quarterback Brennan Armstrong's second rushing TD of the game.
