Theorycraft Games debuts first look at squad-based PvP game Project Loki - Gematsu

Theorycraft Games, a studio formed in December 2020 by former leaders at Riot Games, Bungie, and Blizzard Entertainment, has revealed the first public look at its debut title, code-named Project Loki. It is a team-based player-versus-player game that blends hero shooter, action game, and battle royale, and aims to be the world’s next “10,000-hour game.”

“As players and developers, we feel like it’s been a minute since there’s been something truly new and fun to play with your friends,” said Theorycraft Games CEO Joe Tung in a press release. “To make Project Loki, we took our collective experiences working on some of the biggest team-based player-versus-player games like League [of Legends], VALORANT, Apex [Legends], and Overwatch, and have been building with a group of hardcore playtesters out the gate.”

Tung continued, “Now Project Loki has evolved into something fresh and unlike anything we’ve played so far, and we’re ready to take the next step. It might seem early but we became independent to take a big swing on behalf of players; to do that means involving them as soon as possible, showing our work, and building a community that we’ll listen to across every stage of development.”

Here is an overview of the game, via Theorycraft Games:

Project Loki is a squad-based hero battleground—a blend of genres and a new take on hero-based combat. Described by playtesters as “League [of Legends] meets Apex [Legends] meets [Super] Smash [Bros.],” Project Loki is an all-in-one group adventure, a competitive sandbox, and highlight factory. In a session of Loki, players will assemble a squad of heroes; outplay other teams in sprawling, free-flowing battles; run the edge of a huge world in the sky; and dream up crazy strategies in a massive combat sandbox.

Project Loki is still a work-in-progress, as the team has been developing from the core game loop (combat, movement, hero kits, etc.) out. This means meta-progression, competitive features, hero concepts, environmental design, and final art are all a work-in-progress.

Founded by key developers behind titles like League of Legends, VALORANT, Overwatch, Halo, Destiny, and Apex Legends, Theorycraft is dedicated to deep games worthy of thousands of hours of play, and multiplayer experiences that are just better with friends.

Project Loki is still in early development, but Theorycraft Games is inviting interested users to try out the game early during its next playtest from June 29 to 30. Sign-ups are available here.
