Gollum is the worst reviewed release of the year with a 36 metascore, an almost impressive achievement, and as such, developer Daedalic has issued an apology for the state of the game and promises to fix what they can.
It’s a pretty odd statement, including one that gets the title of the game wrong, calling it “The Lord of Ring: Gollum” in the first sentence.
The apology talks about how it was their biggest project and an honor to take on the Lord of the Rings IP. They talk about listening to feedback and apologizing for disappointing fans. They will fix bugs and technical issues but fundamentally…the game is the game, and why it’s reviewing so poorly has little to do with actual bugs or tech problems. It’s just not a good game in any sense.
Part of the controversy here was not just the state of the game, but the fact Daedalic was charging $60 for it, $70 with odd extra features like elvish language VO and bad emotes. Though this has also sparked a separate debate as to whether developers need to “apologize” to fans at all, even for big missteps, but this adds to a long, long lists of video game apologize text blocks like this, saying sorry for technical problems, game delays and so forth. It’s become an industry meme. It’s hard to make games of course, but we are seeing loads of these in recent years. Albeit none for a game as poorly received as Gollum.
While yes, they made a bad Gollum game, I’m probably more curious about the state of the Lord of the Rings IP, period. Amazon has reportedly spent a billion dollars on its Prime series The Rings of Power, made by first-time showrunners, which at its best is just okayand a poor shadow of the original film trilogy. There’s this game, Gollum, whoever decided a Gollum game needed to be made in the first place. And an upcoming Lord of the Rings MMO is being handled by Amazon Games, which failed to make New World much of a hit, its other original MMO, and Embracer Group, whose stock just crashed 40% after they failed to secure a $2 billion mystery deal. I don’t think those handling the IP now really know how to use it effectively or trust the right people with it. We are a long, long way from the original trilogy, and the licensed games from back then which were actually quite good. Even the last Shadow of Mordor game was bad.
As for Gollum, I don’t think we needed an apology for it, as I’m not like, offended a Gollum game I wasn’t going to play anyway is bad. But this is legitimately one of the lowest scores for a recognizable IP game I’ve seen in years, and I would love to know exactly what it was that happened here, from conception to release.
