Astros' Jose Altuve hit by pitch, exits World Baseball Classic game - Houston Chronicle

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla — Astros second baseman Jose Altuve exited Team Venezuela’s World Baseball Classic game against the United States on Saturday after he was hit by a pitch.

Batting in the bottom of the fifth inning and facing a 1-2 count, Altuve appeared to get hit on the right hand or wrist by a 96 mph fastball from Colorado Rockies reliever Daniel Bard.

Altuve stayed face down on the dirt for a few seconds before exiting the game with a trainer. Manager Omar López — who doubles as Houston's first-base coach — walked out to check on his star second baseman.

Altuve went into Team Venezuela’s clubhouse without moving his right arm.

The Astros had no immediate update on Altuve's condition following a 2-0 Grapefruit League loss against the New York Mets late Saturday night. General manager Dana Brown said Altuve "is being evaluated for an injury to his right hand" and the team would provide an update Sunday.

The sight is an absolute worst-case scenario for the Astros, who had 11 players on their 40-man roster participating in the World Baseball Classic. Four were involved in Saturday's game: Altuve, starter Luis Garcia, outfielder Kyle Tucker and closer Ryan Pressly.

Altuve's apparent injury only furthered discourse about World Baseball Classic participation by star players. Mets closer Edwin Díaz suffered a season-ending knee injury while celebrating Team Puerto Rico's victory against the Dominican Republic earlier this week.

In the wake of Díaz's injury, both Hector Neris and Jeremy Peña said the situation would not discourage them from playing in future tournaments. They were among five Astros who played for Team Dominican Republic.

"It’s unfortunate that that happened to Díaz or any player, but it’s part of our game," Peña said. "Every time we step onto the field, we put ourselves at risk to injury. A lot of people are saying (the WBC's) meaningless, but to us, it’s an honor to represent our country. It means a lot to us. If I can represent my country again, I’ll do it in a heartbeat."
