Starfield headlines the most anticipated video games of 2023 - Canton Repository

The challenges of the coronavirus pandemic have been mitigated. The chip shortage that crippled the availability of next generation consoles is being overcome. A litany of highly anticipated but delayed games is on the slate.

All of these factors have combined to potentially make 2023 one of the biggest years in gaming in recent memory.

In advance of that, let's take a look at 10 of the most anticipated games scheduled for this packed year. Games are listed in alphabetical order.

Diablo IV

For PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, Playstation 4, Playstation 5

The Diablo series seems poised for a massive return to form in the new year. Gone are the vibrant colors, limited class and customization options and auction house woes that crippled Diablo 3 early in its lifespan. Blizzard has returned the series to its more realistic, gothic, dark, horror roots with a muted color palette and plenty of gore to the delight of critics in early previews. Expect this hellish series to possess the schedules of millions of gamers when it launches on June 6.

Final Fantasy XVI

For Playstation 5

The next iteration of the legendary JRPG series begins life as a PS5 exclusive. It is the first new, numbered release in the series since November of 2016 and anticipation is high. Not much is known about this entry other than it seems to be a dark tale of revenge set in an entirely new world. Mature, dark fantasy properties such as Game of Thrones appear to have been a heavy influence on this development team.

Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

For Nintendo Switch

This highly anticipated game is a direct sequel to the Nintendo Switch launch title Breath of the Wild. Little is known of this title other than its projected release date of May 12. That’s not necessarily cause for concern as Nintendo is known to keep most details of its biggest games close to the vest. Expect this to be a game of the year contender.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

For PS5

The original Marvel’s Spider-Man was a system seller when it landed on the PS4 back in 2018. The sequel seems poised to deliver a more robust experience in every way. Expect Peter Parker and Miles Morales to share the spotlight this time around. Kraven the Hunter and Venom are slated to be the main antagonists. Insomniac made its take on the Spider-Man universe feel unique. It’s exciting to consider what boundaries the studio will push in the next entry.

Redfall

For PC, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X

It’s hard not to be at least intrigued at the possibility of any new title from the team that developed the Dishonored series and the latest entry of Prey. Unlike those efforts, this will not be a single-player title. The reveal trailer for this game did it little favors but the gameplay showed off by Microsoft during its summer showcase in 2022 provided reasons for optimism. A class-based co-operative shooter with Borderlands-like loot sprinkled on top could be magic in a bottle. It remains to be seen if this cartoony game featuring a vampire apocalypse will catch on. Having the title available at launch on Xbox and PC Gamepass should only draw more eyes to the project.

Resident Evil 4

For PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X

The series of Resident Evil remakes by Capcom delivers its biggest entry to date on March 24. This is the most beloved entry in the long history of this franchise. Capcom had a misstep with the Resident Evil 3 remake but most of that could be blamed on the limited scope of the original material for that project as well as focusing on a multiplayer component that landed with a thud at launch. This should fare much better. The original survival-horror story is robust and should give the studio enough ideas to produce a memorable final game. With this title and the Dead Space remake landing in January, 2023 is shaping up to be a huge year for horror fans.

Starfield

For PC, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X

Perhaps the biggest individual disappointment of 2022 was this PC and Xbox exclusive missing its November launch date and slipping into 2023. That may not be a bad sign. It’s encouraging that Microsoft was willing to endure a public thrashing from pundits to ensure this title from Elder Scrolls and Fallout mastermind Todd Howard lives up to its potential. Starfield is simply too important of a title for Microsoft to launch anywhere near average. A lot of pressure is on developer Bethesda to deliver after being acquired by Microsoft and you can expect the whispers of mismanagement over first party studios over at Xbox to turn into a loud roar among critics if this project fails.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

For PC, Playstation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X

The original title (Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order) was a pleasant surprise when it launched in 2019. Disney has struggled to tell memorable stories in the Star Wars universe in any medium since acquiring the IP. The team over at Respawn helped Disney out by creating a property in the universe with a strong story and engaging gameplay. The weighty Souls-like combat was satisfying and drove the experience. It helped the the game was also far more forgiving than what you would find in a FromSoftware title. Expect a disturbance in the force on March 17 when this title lands.

Street Fighter 6

For PC, Playstation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X)

Capcom unleashes the next entry in the Street Fighter series on all current generation platforms when it launches on June 2. Capcom also has found a way to add some flair to the series by using bright, vibrant colors and splashing paint on screen to accentuate key moments during fights. Major releases in the fighting game genre are becoming far and few between so it is always big news when a tentpole franchise like Street Fighter produces a new mainline sequel.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

For PC, Playstation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X

The makers of the Arkham trilogy return with a strange premise for a game on paper. The Justice League has fallen under the control of the Superman villain Braniac and are laying waste to Metropolis. A team of four outgunned super villains are sent to eliminate the former heroes. This game takes place in the Arkham timeline and will sadly feature the final performance of the late Kevin Conroy as the voice of Batman. Conroy passed away at the age of 66 in November after 30 years of voicing Bruce Wayne and Batman in various animated series, movies and video games.
