The annual Army-Navy game is being played at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

Army turned to quarterback Cade Ballard in place of Tyhier Tyler in the second quarter, and Ballard tried for a long pass to Ay’Jaun Marshall, but it was incomplete.

Navy’s Bijan Nichols tried for a 44-yard field goal and snuck it in inside the right upright to get Navy on the board for a 3-0 lead.

Army scored the first touchdown of the game with one minute remaining in the half with a blocked punt by Noah Short. Nathaniel Smith returned the ball for a 31-yard touchdown.

Navy has yet to complete a pass in the first half.

Navy entered the game 7-for-7 on the fourth down in the previous four games but failed to capitalize on fourth down again versus Army.

The series

Navy and Army first kicked off on Nov. 29, 1890, when the Midshipmen routed the Black Knights 24-0. During the course of 132 years, Navy leads the rivalry 62-53-7 and won the most recent matchup 17-13 last season. The Midshipmen have won six of the last 10 matchups against the Black Knights.

The matchup

Army comes in with a 5-6 record, while Navy is just 4-7. But Navy enters the game as a 2.5-point favorite, according to BetMGM.

Historically, the matchup is relatively low-scoring. The total for the game hasn’t cracked 40 points since 2013, and the over-under for this year is 32.5. The winning team has scored 17 or fewer points in four of the last five meetings.

Players to watch

Navy quarterback Xavier Arline, who replaced the injured Tai Lavatai, has rushed for 274 yards and attempted only 10 passes this season. Fullback Daba Fofana has rushed for 749 yards and six touchdowns.

Black Knights quarterback Tyhier Tyler leads the team with 601 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns while throwing for 301 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The coaches

Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo is in his 15th season and is the winningest coach in program history, with a 109-82 record.

Army head coach Jeff Monken is in his ninth season at the helm, leading his teams to a combined 63-49 record. Monken ranks second in program history behind Red Blaik, who coached from 1941 to 1958, finishing with a 121-33-10 record.
