Game Day: Florida at Vanderbilt (noon) - Florida Gators

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt defense has lined up against some high-powered offenses this season. With predictable results.

Alabama flattened the Commodores for 628 yards in a 55-3 loss. Ole Miss totaled 589 yards in winning 52-28. And top-ranked Georgia? The Bulldogs rolled up 579 yards and won 55-0.

Even in a 42-31 victory over FCS-classified Elon, Vandy surrendered 495 yards.

Yes, Elon.

So here come the Florida Gators (6-4, 4-5) to face the Commodores (4-6-1, 1-5), not only riding a two-game winning streak but playing their best all-around football of the season after smashing Texas A&M on the road by 17 and South Carolina by 32 at home last weekend. All told, UF cranked out 79 points and 1,007 yards of offense in those two games, while the defense combined to shut out the Aggies and Gamecocks over the last six quarters. Vandy, though, has some momentum of its own after upsetting Kentucky on the road, 24-21, last week to end a 26-game Southeastern Conference losing skid. That would be the same UK team that came to Gainesville back in September and left with a 26-16 win in Coach Billy Napier's first league game.

But this is a different, more confident Florida team these days, just like this Vandy team figures to be feeling better about itself heading into Saturday's contest at FirstBank Stadium.

UF will bring the SEC's second-ranked (and 11th in the nation) rushing attack, which is averaging 225.3 yards per game and against USC came six yards shy of having three 100-yard rushers in the same game. The Gators actually did have three, but quarterback Anthony Richardson was sacked for a six-yard loss in the fourth quarter, reducing his rushing total from 102 to 96. No problem. Richardson, with 1,951 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions, is playing his best football of the season, having now gone four consecutive games without turning the ball over.

Meanwhile, the tailback due of junior Montrell Johnson Jr. (710 yards, 9 TDs) and true freshman
Trevor Etienne (567 yards, 5 TDs), as well as Richardson (584 yards, 9 TDs), are averaging over six yards per carry.

These numbers should bode nicely against a Commodores defense that is 91st nationally and 10th in the conference against the run (164.3 yards per game).

Vanderbilt senior tailback Ray Davis (2), who needs 140 yards over the last two weeks to hit 1,000 on the season, carried 26 times for 129 yards and a touchdown in last week's road upset of Kentucky.

Vandy's offense, meanwhile, is statistically similar. The Commodores average 363.0 yards (that's tied for 86th in the country and 10th in the SEC), but a decent 159.7 on the ground (60th and 9th, respectively). Quarterback Al Swann (1,195 yards, 10 TD, 2 INT) has been very good protecting the football, while tailback Ray Davis (860 yards, 5 TD) is closing in on a 1,000-yard season. Vandy gained 448 yards on the road at Kentucky last week, a team that stonewalled the Gators for just 279.

But that was two months ago. A lot has changed.

The Florida defense still rests among the nation's worst (105th overall, 12th in the SEC) at 421.0 yards surrendered per game, but just 375 the last two weeks, as the Gators have built momentum in their quest to finish the regular season on something of a roll.

Here's their next chance.
