Post-Game Quotes: Akron - Michigan State Athletics

Head Coach Mel Tucker

Opening Statement…
It was a good solid win for us today. First of all, I would like to wish coach (Joe) Moorhead best of luck for the rest of the season. He does a really good job. He has experienced coaches, and he has those guys moving in the right direction there. They gave us all we could handle; those guys played hard.

Our goal was to get better this week in practice. We had a lot of things that we needed to clean up, and I felt like we came into the game as a better football team. We just had to go out on the field and show that, and play a better brand of football more consistently. Offense and defense especially, we needed them to complement each other for the entire ball game. I think our focus was better; our intensity throughout was better. There were a lot of good things for our team to build upon in all three phases. We also have some things that we need to clean up if we expect to go on the road and get anything done. I congratulate all of our players, our coaching staff and the entire organization for the preparation that took place throughout the week that put us in a position to go out and play better football here at home in the Woodshed. We are 2-0. There's a 24 hour rule for us, where we are going to enjoy it, because it's not easy to win football games. You see the scores from across the country; you can't take anything for granted. You have to get the job done, and so I give credit to our guys for going out and playing hard. God knows we have some things that we need to improve upon and clean up, but we are very realistic in our locker room with our guys. We are very realistic. We know it's going to all be about how we show up. We have stretch and stride tomorrow, and then on Monday, we will get to corrections and watching some film. And then we will focus on getting better. We have a process that will put us in position to get better if we focus, and avoid being seduced by success. I'm looking forward to grading this film and taking it to the players, because they will respond. Then, we will get ready for Washington. A shutout is a good deal for our team, because it's not easy to do.

On what he saw from junior quarterback Payton Thorne
I'm going to have to look at the film and analyze the one throw we talked about. I saw he sailed that, but I don't really know why he sailed that. Outside of that, I will just have to get on the film to see what happened. I'll see what Jay (Johnson) has to say, I'll see what Payton (Thorne) has to say, and we will continue to work to get better. I thought he was poised throughout the game. He continued to work hard throughout the game, so we will just have to see.

On senior safety Kendell Brooks' performance…
KB, you know, he is getting better. We have confidence in how he can go into the game and get the job done while making plays. On defense, he does a great job of going to get the ball and getting after people while playing fast. I think as he gains more experience, I think he is going to get better. It's good when guys can go in and execute on the big plays. That's what it's all about. So, I'm proud of him being able to go in there and get the job done today.

On the running back tandem of sophomore Jalen Berger and senior Jarek Broussard
Those guys, you see both of them hitting the hole with some velocity. They do a good job of being physical and falling forward on contact, gaining yards after contact and other things like that. They fight incredibly hard. Those guys are running hard and the line is blocking. Our quarterbacks are getting us in to the correct plays so we can run the ball efficiently. The tight ends are blocking and our receivers are right there, getting the job done. It's a team effort, being able to run the ball. It starts up front with the line, and then the backs have to find the hole and hit it with velocity and vision so we can get what we can get. Even when Eli (senior running back Elijah Collins) got in there, he was hitting holes and he was running hard. He was trying to get everything he could get and taking care of the football at the same time. We've got to be able to run the ball.

On being opportunistic and taking advantage of scoring chances…
I think last week, I don't believe we won the battle for points off turnovers. We did that this week. On defense, our job is to stop the opponent and get the ball back to the offense. So, when you're forcing turnovers and your offense is able to go out and score, that's complementary football. We have to be able to do that, and give our offense a short field. You don't want to ask your offense to drive the ball 80 or 90 yards every series. That's just not a winning formula. When you have to do it, you have to do it. You want to be able to take the ball away, create a short field and score. On the other end, you have to fight to get the ball back, and you just keep chopping. You need offense and defense especially to work together to build up points on the board and keep the opponent's points off the board. When you win that field position battle, that's important, because score probability is a real thing. Drive-start analysis, where you start your drive, the probability of scoring goes way up the closer you get to the goal line. That's what we were able to do today.

On what he saw from the linebackers with Darius Snow out…
We have good players at that position. We talked about Cal [Haladay] and [Aaron] Brule making some plays. It's not like we don't have guys. It was a solid performance from those guys from what I could see. We have some guys that can make some plays. It was a solid performance from them.

On preparations for the team traveling to the West Coast…
Yes. We talked to some people, some experts on that, and we have a plan for our guys. We'll have some things that we'll do differently to put ourselves in the best position to perform, to be our best. We'll have some experts to help our players best we can.

On whether there was a plan beforehand on getting Noah Kim in the game…
We come into the game trying to figure out how to win the game. We're coming in to try to win the game. We talked beforehand on how we want to play the players, who's the next guy in. We have a set rotation, we talked about that.

On Peyton Thorne's return to the game in the third quarter…
He was ready to go and he wanted to play. He's still trying to achieve on the field and still trying to score points, trying to move the ball, have some consistency. He's still working out there. He was ready to go so we put him back out there.

On outside expectations…
I know that the expectations for us have been high-level. It's a high-level organization. So, outside expectations are really not a factor for us. We have high standards, and anything less than the standard is unacceptable. Whether it's a coach or player. We have to work to correct it, and that's what we're going to do.

On Kendell Brooks' adjustment to Division I football coming from a D2 school…
Well he has the skillset, he has the size, he can run, he's a physical player. So, it's a matter of training and preparing, learning the team and just practicing. He's a young player. When he got here, he wanted to be a good player, so he worked hard. He got this opportunity and he works to make the team better. You keep chopping and trusting the process. You know we are going to recruit you to come here, we are certain that you can do it, and we know that you have the potential to do a good job. Players come from small schools all the time, and sometimes that's not an indication of what you can or can't do, you just have to look at the skillset of each guy.

On evaluating his best offensive line combination for the season…
Who has already had playing time? Who has shown in practice that they can go into a game and get the job done? And that starting five, they can easily be in there playing too, and we're going to take them again. So they deserve playing time because of what they have done in practice, and that's a big part of it. We're not saying we're just going to predetermine the whole team, and put guys out there who can't do it yet. These guys have shown that they can do it. They can do it in practice, they can do it in the game. They do it all the time. You can see what they can do. The more guys that have a role on the team, the better the team will be. We're going to play our best players. If you deserve to play, you'll play.

On freshman kicker Jack Stone's ability to rebound from a missed field goal last week…
In practice this past week, he put the ball in the same spot where he missed the try on Friday. Same spot, same distance, everything, and he made it in practice. He can do it. That was a good ball he kicked. That thing got its distance. It's good for a freshman, coming in like that and rebounding.

Akron Head Coach Joe Moorhead

Opening Statement…
Have to give a ton of credit to Coach Tucker and his team, they are the 11th or 15th team depending on what poll you look at, and they played like it. Ran the ball well, threw it effectively, were very good on defense and special teams. Thought we had an opportunity in the first quarter, we were moving the ball, and we talk about performance indicators, explosive play margin, turnover margin, and 3rd down and red zone. We didn't win any of those. You can't turn the ball over once against a team like this, let alone four times and expect to win. There were a bunch of positives we will build off of and enough to correct, and we will have a good film session tomorrow and get back after it for practice.

On the turnovers and penalties…
A couple of them were sacks, one on an exchange with an option, two guys trying to fight for extra yards, one was a ball handling issue, and the other was a strip sack fumble. Certainly that's something we work at every day and you can't turn the ball over. We had one post snap unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, got that guy out of the game and didn't let him play for a while. Other ones were penalties of aggression, a couple pass interferences, a couple things where we were trying to make plays and you certainly have to get those things cleared up. Too many turnovers, to many penalties, can't beat a team like Michigan State doing those things.

On the impact of DJ Irons's injury…
You probably saw some of the adjustments we need to make relatively to Jeff (Undercuffler Jr.), not a dual threat guy like DJ (Irons), big guy, strong arm, you know I think he was a little anxious today on his first competition against an FBS opponent but we will get him settled in there, Coach Fessler will do a good job, and we have to build the game plan around things he does well and minimize his weaknesses.

On how the defense played…
You can't put your defense in adverse situations like that, I believe two or three of the turnovers resulted in scores for the other team. We got two picks and a stop on downs, and you can't let a big and physical team like Michigan State continue to get extra possessions and wear you down against a team of this caliber.

On the play of the offensive line…
A lot of sacks and those count as rushing yards so I will be interested in going back and looking at the yards per carry. We cut down the pressure and sacks overall from the last game against one of the best pass rushers in the country with number 64 (Jacob Slade) and the Windmon kid (Jacoby Windmon), so that was a positive. Got a little bit leaky late in the game when Jeff (Undercuffler Jr.) held onto the ball a little bit long. At the end of the day you have to be able to hold onto the ball and protect the passer and that starts up front. We're looking for the right combination and continue working with those guys on fundamentals and technique and make sure we're calling plays that put them in a place to be successful.

Redshirt junior QB Payton Thorne
On his performance today and how he is feeling physically after his hit…
After the hit, they came out there right away; they're pretty quick to get out there. I was slow to get up; I feel like I got up decently fast. They talked to me, made me go get checked for the concussion business, and I was all good. Obviously, I didn't want to come out of the game. I wanted to stay in the game. But Noah (Kim) stepped in, he threw a touchdown, that was great to see. In terms of play, I'll have to go watch the film. Obviously, the two things that stick out are the two interceptions. That is unacceptable, can't have those. I thought we ran really well, I thought our O-line played really well today as well. That's what I'm looking at more, as a team, as an offense.

On his performance today …
For me in my personal play, I'm looking at taking care of the ball better. Like I said, it's not acceptable to be turning the ball over. The first one, they brought a blitz in that we had seen on film one time, we actually ran it yesterday. I thought they ran, and I think they dropped the D linemen right outside where I had thrown the ball yesterday. You know, that's probably where they were gonna eat that one, take the sack. In the flea flicker one, I was throwing that to Keon (Coleman), trying to let him go make a play. That's another one where I couldn't really see, to be honest, what was out there, but that's really where I probably should've just tucked down and taken the sack, but you know, playing quarterback, we always talk about not taking the sacks. It's tough with that fine line between 'Get it your of your hand' and 'This one, you just have to take it.'

On his high throws and self-correction…
I'm really tired of throwing the balls high; it's pissing me off. I did the same thing last week, and that's never been an issue for me, so I gotta figure that out quickly, because I can't have that anymore. I thought our receivers did a good job today, they got open when they needed to, and I just gotta put it on them. There was one tonight on the post that I threw where my read told me to throw the post, but I needed to get out there, and check, and make sure our post is winning, I can't always assume that he won on his route on the corner. I just let that one go, I was hoping to make the play, but I have to check at the corner, because sometimes the corner's going to be over the post, so you can't always throw them. Gotta be sharper, and I'm not sharp enough for me. But like I said, running backs played great today; it was great to see both of them.

On these previous home games versus the upcoming away game and how that is going to impact the team's play…
Obviously going out there to Washington, they have a good team, I don't know what they did today, but they've got good players. I've heard that their linebackers are very solid, so I'm sure they'll have a good defense, they're gonna be fast, and we'll just have to get ready to go. We're gonna have to worry about us, watch film, and be well-prepared on their defense. But we have to worry about our execution and focus on what we need to do to get ourselves in the right position to win.

On the interchangeable running backs this year versus the one running back last year…
It's obviously different having two versus one. We can run them out there and exchange, and if one gets tired or if one guy gets a little bit of a tweak here or there, you can run the next one out, so it's been good stuff. I think they both bring great things to the table, they both are good pass catchers, and they've done a good job so far these first few games of being explosive and getting us in good situations to run the ball.

On analyzing and identifying his struggles in his game…
I was thinking about that on the sidelines. I'm not necessarily finishing some throws, I know that's kind of a common thing to say which kind of sounds stupid, but just ripping the ball, you know, it seems like sometimes I'm trying to place it a little too much instead of just ripping it, so I think that's part of it. It all starts with your feet, so I have to take a look at my feet and make sure that my base is good and my feet are active, things of that nature. I'm definitely gonna do a good self study after this one to be better.

On the fourth and one play to Jarek Broussard and whether he audibled on that play and on whether he can audible…
No I didn't audible; we had that play called. I thought we had a good look to the run the play that we ran. I'll have to go and look at the film. I think we had a little bit of a miscommunication on the play side, I don't know. Somebody I think came free, which made it hard on Jarek to bounce it, but I'll have to take a look at that on film.

Michigan State senior CB Kendell Brooks

On the jump to a DI program on which he is now starting…
I think it's cool just to see how far I've grown as a player. Coming from my last school to now, I've learned a lot since I have been here about football. So, I think it was cool to put that to use on the field.

Following up on what he's learned from his new coaches…
Just the ins and outs of football. I wasn't really aware of coverages and everything like that. But coming into here, coaches like coach Barnett really go into depth to make sure you really understand everything about football.

On how this influx in higher level coaching has allowed him to be able to hit harder on the field…
Yeah because it allowed me to play faster.

On how his experience on special team affected his play on defense…
I think it kind of allowed me to get my feet wet into Big Ten football. I think special teams just prepared me to go out on defense.

On his first forced fumble of the game and how he felt after…
I was just reading my keys. It was Cover 3, so I was reading the quarterback. I saw him take his hand off the ball and throw, so I broke. And I kind of just glanced over at the tight end to see where he was throwing. And then I just ran through contact.

On if some of his hits from last week provided him with confidence going into today's game…
Yeah most definitely. It was my first time taking real reps, so it kind of just provided a sense of comfort to know that I can do this at this level.

On his confidence about making the most of his opportunity once his name was called…
Well, I was very confident, because I prepared the same way I always prepared. So, I felt like I was prepared, and I know who I am as a player. So, I was just trying to go out there and trying to be myself and execute my assignment.

His response on how the secondary feeds off each other after a big hit or play…
Oh yeah, for sure. I think the entire team, offense and defense, I think it sends like a shock of energy through everybody.

On how the defense was able to overcome some first have struggles to go out and complete the shutout…
Well, all we talk about is leaving the game with a goose egg (shutout). So, it was good for us to be able to achieve that goal. And I think going into next week, it provides a sense of confidence and helps us with our comradery to achieve that.

Fifth-year RB Jarek Broussard

On what you think made for a better second half…
It's literally just the mentality we had as a team, keeping the mentality as we play. Keeping it rolling.

On how you responded to Coach Tucker's message to the team on playing unacceptably last week…
It's a be where your feet at. You can't really look at the negatives from last week, you can only move forward and change. It's the same mentality, keep chopping.

On how in the past RB's have had different styles, how he and Jalen present different problems…
I think we complement each other really well. There is the drop off and I feel like we get that enjoyment and it's good.

On how much it helps to have proper guys help run the ball and help you stay fresh…
The idea of keeping your legs fresh and having someone that's going to encourage you to make a play, because if you make a play, he might make a play. It's kind of feeding off each other and keeping our legs fresh is very beneficial to the team.

On how you have benefitted from having each other in the RB room this year…
With me being older and having a little more experience, as the game goes on and watching tape, you kind of chop it up and talk about where each other's eyes are and what we see. I feel like we can only get better, because we'll just get better when we play.

On how you recovered from the fourth and one…
I got the ball and bounced it. I should have gotten that vertical. It's that Spartan mentality, the next time I ran, I had to make the most of it. You can't really live life in the past.

On how eager he is to see the team go west of Washington…
There is a lot of excitement going forward. It's a week-by-week approach and whoever is on the schedule is who we are going to focus on.

On what you have to adjust when the offensive line changes…
It really just comes down to read and react.
