Even if there is a drought of first-party titles right now, there are plenty of games for someone to try out, and finding new personal favorites on subscriptions like this is one of various reasons for their success. There’s one indie game coming to Xbox Game Pass soon everyone should check out.
When it comes to indies, there are sometimes viral hits that capture fans’ attention—like Hades or Rogue Legacy 2. Sometimes, others are more obscure, and discovery is important. Game Pass helps with that. It doesn’t need to with Inside, Playdead’s indie hit, when it joins Xbox Game Pass on July 29, but it’s one that has flown under many radars nonetheless. Inside is truly something special among indie games.

Over on OpenCritic, Inside sits at a super comfortable 91 Top Critic Average, with a total of 94% of reviewers recommending it. 90+ in the industry is rare, and for context, only four video games in 2022 so far have a 90+ average. One of those is Elden Ring, which proved to be a major shake-up for how a developer can approach an open-world game.
Inside, nonetheless, has achieved similar critical acclaim, if for different reasons. Because of its indie and perhaps odd status, it hasn’t achieved the same level of commercial success, and that’s a shame. In Inside, players control a boy in a dystopian world, where they must solve environmental puzzles and avoid death. It borrows a similar and unique graphical appeal from its predecessor, Limbo.
When it was released, it was praised for its improvements over Limbo, the unique art direction and atmosphere, and intuitive gameplay. Its endings led to tons of discussion and interpretation online, and it would end up being nominated for tons of accolades, including Game of the Year. In fact, it is often considered one of the greatest video games of all time—something that is often hyperbole, but perhaps not really for this indie title.
It's different. More importantly, it’s different in a good way. It’s bringing all of its unique qualities to Xbox Game Pass, and for those who may never have checked out this indie, it’s an easy recommendation.
