KANEOHE, Hawaii – After a slugfest in game one, the Western Oregon University softball team fought off a late rally by Hawaii Pacific to win in extra innings to split the doubleheader on Saturday. Hawaii Pacific took the opener by a score of 13-11 and then the Wolves broke open a 3-3 tie in the second game with two runs in the eighth for the 5-3 win.
The teams combined for 24 runs and 34 hits in the first game. WOU (9-4) started strong with three runs in the first inning. Logan Carlos walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Zoie Recolan singled up the middle to put runners at the corners. After Recolan stole second, Natalie Willoughby singled to left for the RBI. Kirah McGlothan added a single to left for another RBI. With the bases loaded, Hannah Stewart singled to left to bring in the third run of the inning for a 3-0 lead.
Hawaii Pacific (5-6) answered back with three runs in the home half of the inning to tie the game at three.
The Sharks plated five runs in the second to move ahead at 8-3.
The Wolves kept chipping away. In the third, McGlothan doubled and later scored on a single up the middle by Kate Ronning to trim the deficit to 8-4. Hawaii Pacific answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to go ahead at 9-4.
In the fifth, WOU nearly came all the way back to tie. Willoughby opened the frame reaching on an error. Maddie Doig tallied a single through the left side and then a single up the middle by Ronning loaded the bases. McKenzie Westphal added a single to left to score Willoughby. With the bases still loaded, Baylie Kahele hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Doig. Carlos later singled to left to score two more runs and leave Hawaii Pacific just ahead at 9-8. In the home half, the Sharks came back with two runs to push the lead to 11-8.
WOU evened the score in the sixth. Willoughby walked and then moved to second on a foul out. Doig singled to push Willoughby to third. After the second out was recorded, Westphal walked and Kahele singled to right to score two runs. Carlos kept the bats going with an RBI double to left-center to tie the game at 11.
In a theme of the game, Hawaii Pacific came right back in the home half plating two runs to jump ahead again at 13-11.
Down to their last at-bat, WOU threatened. Willoughby singled and with two outs, Doig singled, before a groundout ended the game with Hawaii Pacific surviving at 13-11.
Each team tallied 17 hits in the first game and there were four combined errors, three committed by WOU. Carlos led the offense with three hits and three RBI. Doig also added three hits and two runs scored. Willoughby, McGlothan, Ronning and Kahele all tallied two hits. Kahele added three RBI.
In the circle, Maddie Mayer started and went the first two innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) to end up with the no decision. Jada Young tossed the next 2.2 innings as the Hawaii native pitched for the first time on the trip, allowing three runs (two earned). Nicki Derrick went the final 1.1 innings to end up with the loss (0-1) allowing two earned runs.
Noel Saunders had a big game for Hawaii Pacific going 5-5 with two RBI. Kanoe Tanigawa added three hits. Poliahu Aina, Neva Poulin and Hoku Ching all tallied two hits. Ching added four RBI. In the circle, Malia Torres pitched all seven innings for the Sharks to get the win (2-4) allowing the 11 runs (seven earned). She didn't have a strikeout in the 43 batters faced in the game.
The second game seemed mild compared to game one, but still featured eight runs and 12 hits combined.
After a scoreless first inning, WOU opened the scoring in the second. Willoughby was hit-by-pitch and after an out, Ronning ripped a double to right-center to put runners at second and third. Sophie Franklin delivered the big hit with a double to left-center to score both runs. After moving to third on a passed ball, Westphal hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Franklin for the 3-0 lead.
Chelsea Smith kept the Sharks off the board into the fifth inning. Hawaii Pacific came back with three runs in the inning to tie the game at three.
The teams would go scoreless over the next two innings to send the game to extra innings.
In the eighth with the international tiebreaker rule in effect placing a runner at second, WOU had Derrick on at second to start the inning. Willoughby quickly brought the run in with a double to left-center. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Willoughby came home on a sacrifice fly to left by McGlothan to move WOU out to a 5-3 lead.
That was all Smith needed. In the home half of the eighth, Smith tallied a sacrifice bunt groundout, a foul out and then a groundout to second to give WOU the 5-3 victory.
Hawaii Pacific held a 7-5 edge in hits and neither team committed an error.
Willoughby led the Wolves with two hits and two runs scored, along with an RBI. Franklin tallied two RBI. In the circle, Smith went all eight innings for her fifth win (5-0) of the season, allowing just the three earned runs, along with five strikeouts.
Tiari Hernandez led the Sharks with two hits. In the circle, Taylor Thompson started and went all eight innings as well, allowing five runs (three earned) and added nine strikeouts to end up with the loss (3-3).
WOU will close their Hawaii trip on Monday playing a doubleheader with Chaminade starting at 2 p.m. Pacific.
