Russell Westbrook misses 1st game of season due to lower back tightness - NBA.com

Russell Westbrook was out of the Los Angeles Lakers’ game on Wednesday night against the Portland Trail Blazers because of lower back tightness.

It was the first game Westbrook has missed this season.

Playing the second night of a back-to-back at Portland, the Lakers lost 107-105 — their fifth straight defeat on the road.

LeBron James had 30 points for the Lakers, who took responsibility for the team’s 21 turnovers that led to 28 Portland points and were particularly damaging down the stretch.

“Every time we turned the ball over it was almost like pick sixes. We didn’t get a tackle and they basically ran it in for a touchdown every time,” James said. “That’s not the ingredients for winning basketball.”

James and Dwight Howard were listed as questionable going into the game. James played and while Howard was available, he remained on the bench.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Westbrook was also experiencing lower back tightness in Tuesday night’s loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Without Westbrook, who is averaging 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.6 assists in 55 games this season, the Lakers started LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Trevor Ariza, Malik Monk and Avery Bradley. It was the team’s 28th starting lineup this season.

As the Thursday deadline approached, rumors swirled about Westbrook’s future with the team.

“If there’s way to improve our team, we’ll improve our team. I’ve got nothing else to say about the trade deadline,” Lakers coach Frank Vogel said.

Said James: “Obviously it’s something that’s weighing on this group that we’re trying to all get through. It almost feels like fog in the air and we’re all trying to see what’s on the other side of it.”
