Post-Game Notes: Penn State - Michigan State Athletics

Michigan State defeated Penn State, 30-27, on a snowy Saturday afternoon in Spartan Stadium . . . there was a consistent snowfall throughout the entire game as the Spartans took a one-game edge in the all-time series against the Nittany Lions, 18-17-1 . . . MSU is 11-6 against PSU in East Lansing.

With the win, Michigan State claimed its 10th win of the season for the ninth time in school history (1965, 1999, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2021) and the first time since 2017.

MSU head coach Mel Tucker is the earliest Spartan coach to record a 10-win season (previous: Mark Dantonio with 11 wins in his fourth season in 2010).

Michigan State reclaimed the Land Grant Trophy with the win . . . since the renewal of the series in 1993, the winner of the Michigan State-Penn State game has been presented the Land Grant Trophy. The trophy honors the two universities' unique places in history as the two pioneer land-grant schools in the nation. Each institution was founded in 1855: Michigan State on Feb. 12 and Penn State on Feb. 22. The schools were the prototypes after which the land-grant system was patterned . . . since 1993, Penn State leads the series, 16-10, but the Spartans have won six of the last nine matchups.

Michigan State went 6-0 at home this season, marking the 21st time MSU has gone undefeated in Spartan Stadium (opened in 1923) during a home season.

Going from two wins in 2020 to 10 wins in 2021, MSU completed the biggest turnaround in school history (previous: seven-game improvement from 2016 to 2017).

OFFENSE
Kenneth Walker III recorded his eighth 100-yard rushing game of the season with 138 yards . . . he tied his season high with 30 carries . . . Walker's eight 100-yard rushing games are tied for third most in an MSU season . . . Walker now has 1,636 rushing yards, which is fourth most in an MSU season . . . he rushed for a 2-yard touchdown in the first quarter, giving him 18 for the season, tied for fifth in an MSU season . . . he has 19 TDs overall this season.

Payton Thorne completed 19-of-30 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns . . . Thorne now has 24 touchdown passes this season, tied for second most in an MSU season (record: Kirk Cousins with 25 in 2011) . .  it marked the seventh 200-yard passing game of the season for Thorne . . . Thorne's 2,886 passing yards are good for seventh most in an MSU season.

Jayden Reed caught a team-high six passes for 89 yards . . . on a fourth-and-15 play late in the fourth quarter from the PSU 20, Reed caught a touchdown pass from Thorne to put MSU on top, 30-20 . . . Reed now has eight TD receptions this season to go along with 53 catches for 946 yards.

MSU went on a season-long 99-yard drive on nine plays on its second possession of the game, capped by a 9-yard TD pass from Thorne to Tre Mosley.

On its second drive of the third quarter, MSU went on a 15-play, 75-yard touchdown drive in 8:53 . . . it marked the longest scoring drive of the season in terms of plays (15) and time (8:53).

Connor Heyward tied his season high with four catches and had a season-high 60 yards, including 40 yards after the catch.

Montorie Foster hauled in a career-high four receptions for 41 yards.

Maliq Carr had a career high two catches for 51 yards, including a 40-yard reception that sparked MSU's first TD drive.

Michigan State collected 451 yards of total offense (268 passing, 183 rushing) . . . MSU ran 77 plays to PSU's 60 and had the ball 36:24 compared to PSU's 23:36.

MSU rushed the ball a season-high 47 times for 183 yards . . . MSU is 4-0 when running the ball more 40-plus times this season and 9-0 when rushing 35-plus times.

The Spartans were 9-of-18 on third-down conversions and 3-of-4 on fourth-down conversions.

DEFENSE

The Spartan defense posted its 11th-straight game with at least one takeaway with two fumble recoveries (Drew Beesley and Justin White), leaving the Northwestern game as the only game this season in which MSU did not collect a takeaway . . . White posted a takeaway for the second-straight game after an interception in the last game at Ohio State (11/20).

The two fumble recoveries marked the Spartan defense's fifth game with multi turnovers this season, along with four takeaways at Miami (9/18), three vs. Nebraska (9/25) and Indiana (10/16), and two vs. Michigan (10/30).

MSU held Penn State to just 61 yards rushing, marking the fourth game this season under 100 yards, as the Spartans improved to 3-1 when holding the opposition under 100 yards . . . the 61 yards is the third-fewest yards allowed behind a season-low 52 by Miami (9/18) and 58 by Purdue (11/6) . . . by keeping the Nittany Lions out of the endzone on the ground, the Spartan defense logged their sixth game this season without yielding a rushing TD.

Redshirt-freshman linebacker Cal Haladay registered a career-high 11 tackles to lead the MSU defense . . . it marked his third double-digit tackle outing, joining his previous career-best of 10 previously done twice, vs. Western Kentucky (10/2) and Michigan (10/30) . . . Haladay also posted his career-high with 2.5 tackles for loss, topping his previous high of 1.0 done twice before, last vs. Rutgers (10/9) . . . he also registered his first 0.5 sack of his Spartan career . . . Haladay also matched his career-best with one forced fumble, also doing so vs. Western Kentucky (10/2).

Senior defensive end Drew Beesley had a standout final game in the Woodshed, with a career-high tying seven tackles, matching his previous career-best which also came against Penn State (12/12/20), while registering 1.5 sacks, one pass break-up and one fumble recovery . . . the 1.5 TFLs was his fourth game in his eight games played this season with at least 1.0 tackle for loss.

Sophomore safety Darius Snow dazzled in the snowy weather, with seven tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss and one pass break-up . . . the seven stops marked the seventh-straight game with six or more tackles, while posting at least 0.5 TFL in three of the last four games and in five total games this season.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Senior placekicker Matt Coghlin had two PATs and one field goal before departing with an injury, but the five points ties the MSU career points record, matching Brett Swenson (2006-09) with 377 points . . . Coghlin is now 39-of-39 on PATs and 11-of-17 on FGs this season as well as 142-of-146 PATs and 75-of-102 FGs for his career, padding his school record for career FGs.
