HPU Travels To Northwestern for First Road Game of the Year - HPU Panthers

After two straight home games The High Point University men's basketball team will play its first road game of the season against Big Ten opponent Northwestern on Friday, November 12th at 8:00 PM EST. The game against the Wildcats represents one of two Big Ten opponents the Panthers will face this season as HPU will play Michigan State later in December. It is HPU first road game after playing two home contests inside the Qubein Center this week and last week. 
 
Across the Bench
 
Northwestern was 9-15 a season ago losing to Minnesota 51-46 in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. 
 
Chris Collins is the head coach of Northwestern and is in his eighth season. 
 
Boo Buie, the junior from Albany, New York led the Wildcats in scoring last time out against Eastern Illinois with 17 points in 28 minutes played in Northwestern's season opener. 
 
Last Time Out
 
The Panthers had a historic regular-season debut in the Qubein Center as they beat Shenandoah 108-59. The Panthers broke the century mark for the first time since January 2, 2019 (Washington College) and ten Panthers got into the scoring column on the night.  John-Michael Wright led the Panthers in scoring with 23 points and six assists; Wright also went 5-8 from three-point range on the day. Zack Austin also scored 20 points on the day and added nine rebounds and four blocks, finishing one rebound shy of a double-double. The Panthers finished the day with 20 assists, which was the first time they had 20+ assists since December 21, 2019 (Belmont Abbey). The Panthers also had 11 blocks on the day as a team, which is tied for 2nd all-time in program history and the first time since December 2, 2006 (Ohio).

HPU started the game five for five from three-point land in a lightning fast run that created a big lead early against Shenandoah. 

 
JMW in Season Openers
Last season against Davidson, JMW lit it up in the season opener hitting six three pointers. This season in the regular season debut for HPU he was on fire from three point again nailing five threes in the win against the Hornets. 


 
Panther Dunk Counter
 
High Point was a team that jammed it quite a few times last season that trend is looking like it will continue for the 2021-22 campaign. Last time out alone in the first regular season game of the year The Panthers had nine dunks. 
 
Two for 20
 
Both Austin and Wright filled the stat sheet on Tuesday night as both ended with twenty or more points. 
 
Mr. Wright Now
 
John-Michael Wright was named to the Big South Preseason First Team. Wright was highlighted by the NCAA in August as one of the top nine returning scorers in the nation. Wright averaged 20.7 points per game a season ago, which was good for the 17th best scorer in the nation. He assisted on nearly 25% of HPU's baskets when he was in the game a season ago according to Kenpom. Wright was the second-highest scorer in the Big South last season.
 
Non-Conference Play
 
High Point will play 14 non-conference games in total, nine of them taking place inside the beautiful Qubein Center in its inaugural season and the other five occurring on the road. Four of the Panthers' five opponents on the road are Power-Five teams.
