Fall Update: World Series Game 1 - Southeastern Lions Athletics

HAMMOND, La. – Joe Delaney ripped a two-out, two-run double in the fourth inning Saturday, while right-handers Hunter O'Toole and Hayden Robb combined to make the lead hold up during a 3-1 win for the Mamou Mambas in the opening game of the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball program's annual Heart of a Lion Fall World Series at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

"It was a pretty clean game overall and it came down to two-out RBIs," head coach Matt Riser said. "We talk about it all the time. Two-out RBIs are backbreakers. The guys in gold had some better ABs than the guys in green, helping them come out on top."

O'Toole (1-0) and Will Kinzeler (2-1) were locked into a scoreless pitcher's duel when Delaney ripped his two-out double, driving in Pierce Leavengood and Ethan Butler for the lead.

"You saw how weather can affect a result," Riser said. "We hit a few balls hard that would have gotten out of here in the spring, but in the fall, with a north wind, it knocks some balls down. You have to change your game plan offensively. Our pitchers recognized that and did a good job of challenging hitters. We hit some balls well, but at the end of the day they made some good pitches in big moments."

O'Toole surrendered a run in the fifth before yielding to Robb. The Mambas got that run back in the eighth on an RBI single by freshman catcher Michael Curry.

A junior from Arkansas City, Kansas, O'Toole earned the win, allowing one run in 4.2 innings pitched. He scattered three hits and one walk, striking out four. Robb earned his first save of the fall, logging 4.1 shutout innings of relief work. He scattered a pair of hits and two walks, striking out seven batters.

"They've both had a good fall. It was a great finish for both of them. They'll be done for the fall now. We've been using Robb as a starter, but he's a swing guy. In the spring, we might have to bring him in during the sixth to finish it out and get a key win when we need it."
