If the thought of playing an XCOM game with superheroes sounds exciting to you, look no further than Midnight Suns.
The game was revealed today during the Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation with a CGI trailer. Sadly, no gameplay was shown during the presentation though we’ll get a taste of that on September 1 on the Midnight Suns website.
Players will take on the role of The Hunter, a new superhero and the only one who has ever defeated the game’s villain, Lilith.
"Through a twisted marriage of magic and science, the nefarious force known as Hydra has revived Lilith, Mother of Demons, after centuries of slumber," Firaxis notes in a press release. "Lilith will stop at nothing to complete an ancient prophecy and summon her evil master, Chthon. Pushed to the brink, the Avengers desperately look to fight fire with Hellfire by enlisting the help of the Midnight Suns … Young heroes with powers deeply rooted in the supernatural, formed to prevent the very prophecy Lilith aims to fulfill."
The story is influenced, but distinct, from the 90s’ comic event Rise Of The Midnight Sons.
Players will have access to a dozen other heroes to form their teams, and as you can see above these include Wolverine, Iron Man, Doctor Strange and many more. The Hunter will be entirely customizable so you can make the character entirely your own.
Between missions, players will spend time in The Abbey where your character will walk around in third-person over-the-shoulder perspective, talk and bond with other teammates and prepare for more missions against HYDRA and Lilith.
Firaxis has stated that the actual gameplay will be quite different from XCOM, however, having had to change many things from those tactical games in order to make it all work. That makes sense given how different sci-fi alien combat is from magical superhero combat. Hopefully it’s just as tactical and addictive.
Midnight Suns is slated to launch on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
