The Rockies (3-4) begin their first roadtrip of the season against the San Francisco Giants (3-3). Following his rocky debut last week, Gomber hopes to get back on the right track in the seaside air of Northern California as the Giants celebrate their home opener.
The Rockies offense is hoping to get their fans some taco’s for the fourth straight game, after scoring eight, eight, and seven runs respectively in their last three contests. The last two games were wins, so a win today would also bring the Rockies back to .500 exactly one week after they were last at that mark. Ryan McMahon, off to a hot start this season with a .360 average and four homers, has moved up in the order, hitting second today.
Gomber’s Coors Field debut did not go as planned, and he’ll be hoping a change of scenery can lead to more positive results. He allowed three runs with seven walks in just three innings, so control will be a paramount to his success. He’ll also try to give the bullpen a rest as the new series begins - despite a big lead entering the late innings yesterday, Yency Almonte, Carlos Estévez, and closer Daniel Bard were all utilized. A deep start for Gomber would go a long way in helping the Rockies ‘pen stay fresh for the remaining two games in San Francisco.
Cueto, entering his 13th year in MLB, counters for the Giants. His first start of the year against the Mariners saw him go 5 2⁄3 innings, giving up three earned runs against six hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts. Of note, Charlie Blackmon owns a career .333 average against Cueto, with a homer and four doubles. Interestingly, reliever Jhoulys Chacín owns a .429 average (three hits in seven at-bats). Could we see a potential pinch-hitting situation?
(probably not, but hey)
