Baseball Starts 10-Game Road Trip With Bemidji State - Augustana College Vikings

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Viking baseball hits the road this weekend for a three-game series against the Bemidji State Beavers in what is the start of a 10-game road trip. Augustana is currently 10-4 overall and 6-4 in the NSIC.

The Games
Baseball starts at 1:30 p.m. on Friday with a doubleheader followed by a single game at noon on Saturday. Live video and live stats for the games will be available on GoAugie.com/Live

The Beavers
Bemidji State comes into its matchup with Augustana at 2-13 overall and 1-9 in the NSIC. The Beavers were swept by Minnesota State, Winona State and Upper Iowa and won one-of-three games in their series with Sioux Falls.

The Vikings
In its 10-game homestand, Augustana took two-of-three from St. Cloud State and Minot State and split mid-week doubleheaders with SMSU and Minnesota Crookston.

The Viking pitching staff has been striking out opposing hitters at an impressive rate this season. In 14 games, Augustana pitchers have set down 155 hitters, averaging over 12 strikeouts per nine innings, ranking ninth in the nation.

Even more impressive, the Vikings have twice tied the single-game record for team strikeouts (18 in a game from the 1958 season) this season: game four against Cameron University and game two against Minnesota Crookston. In addition, junior righty Thomas Bruss struck out five hitters in one inning in the game four performance against Cameron.

Throw in game one's perfect game from junior lefty Tanner Brown against Minot State and one could argue that the Augustana pitching staff is off to one of the most unprecedented starts in history.

The top three starters on the staff, Brown, senior righty Max Steffens and sophomore righty Ryan Jares, all own 20-or-more strikeouts, ERAs under 2.20, are a combined 6-0 and are set to throw in the weekend series against the Beavers.

At the plate, Augustana is seeing several starters heat up. Sophomore outfielder Carter Howell is currently hitting .451 and has hit safely in his last eight games with five of those games being multi-hit games. Howell also leads the squad in steals with nine. Senior outfielder Riley Johnson has tallied four multi-hit games in his last seven games played and is currently hitting .375.

Junior infielder, and NSIC Preseason Player of the Year, Jordan Barth is 12-for-25 in his last six games played with four doubles, three homers, 12 RBIs and seven runs scored and is currently hitting .368. Junior catcher Will Olson went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader against Crookston with two homers and a double and is now hitting .263 on the season.

Players to Watch
Riley Johnson is two runs scored, four hits and two stolen bases away from owning all of those career records at Augustana. Senior shortstop Sam Baier is two starts away from breaking both the career games played and career games started records.

One Last Thing
The Vikings are 29-7 in the all-time series with the Beavers, with Augustana currently on an eight-game win streak.
