Syracuse, N.Y. – Syracuse’s game at Louisville on Wednesday was postponed after a member of the Cardinals’ basketball program tested positive for the coronavirus.
The news of the postponement came less than five hours before tipoff of the game at the KFC Yum Center in Louisville.
“It’s the year that we’re in,’' Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said shortly after receiving word that the game had been called off. “It’s difficult, but you have to expect things like this to happen in times like these and just be ready to deal with it.’'
Syracuse’s game at Louisville on Wednesday marked the second time that a game between the Orange and the Cardinals has been postponed this season. Louisville was scheduled to play at Syracuse on Feb. 3, but that game was called off when a test result for a member of the Louisville program came back positive on the morning of the game.
Syracuse (12-6 overall, 6-5 ACC) now has had five games postponed this season without being rescheduled or made up.
Boeheim said he believes the ACC and SU officials will schedule a game for the Orange during the last week of the regular season. Syracuse’s last game of the season is against North Carolina on Monday, March 1.
“We’ll get one game in that last week, I think, after we play North Carolina,’' Boeheim said. “I’m not sure who it’ll be, but I think we’ll play someone on that Wednesday.’'
Boeheim also said Syracuse might be able to play on the final Saturday of the regular season. The Orange does not have a game on March 6 but could get a game in the event another ACC team has to go on pause that weekend.
In talking about the possibility of making up some ACC games, Boeheim shot down the notion of playing a non-conference opponent.
“We need to look at playing conference games,’' he said. “There’s some chance that maybe one team won’t be able to play on that Saturday and we’ll get a game. But we’re just going to play conference games. That’s what we have to do.’'
Specifically, regarding Colgate, which is 9-1 and ranked No. 11 in the NCAA’s NET rankings, Boeheim said, “Their conference won’t let them play (outside the conference).’'
Syracuse’s next game is on Saturday against Notre Dame at the Carrier Dome. Following that, Syracuse is at Duke on Feb. 22 and at Georgia Tech on Feb. 27. Syracuse then hosts North Carolina at the Dome in what, for now anyway, is the Orange’s final regular-season game.
