After ample speculation, PlayStation is officially bringing Days Gone and other hot exclusives to the PC starting this spring. In a new interview, the head of PlayStation Jim Ryan detailed the plans to start expanding where PlayStation games are available and the choice behind it. This all comes after the recent announcement that MLB The Show 21 would be the first PlayStation Studios game on Xbox.
PlayStation has a wide range of big marquee titles that define the PlayStation experience. Even if there's no other reason to own a PlayStation for someone, the amount of high-quality exclusive games make the consoles worth it on their own. With games like Uncharted, The Last of Us, Spider-Man, and God of War, the PlayStation line-up is pretty close to being borderline unbeatable. Sony began testing the waters for bringing its exclusives by putting the acclaimed open-world title, Horizon: Zero Dawn, on PC back in August.
In an interview with GQ, Jim Ryan noted the choice to bring the PlayStation line-up to PC, which will continue to expand with Days Gone this spring. "We find ourselves now in early 2021 with our development studios and the games that they make in better shape than they’ve ever been before. Particularly from the latter half of the PS4 cycle our studios made some wonderful, great games. There’s an opportunity to expose those great games to a wider audience and recognise the economics of game development, which are not always straightforward. The cost of making games goes up with each cycle, as the calibre of the IP has improved. Also, our ease of making it available to non-console owners has grown. So it’s a fairly straightforward decision for us to make," said Ryan.
Ryan also went on to discuss how Horizon's rather buggy PC port was received, suggesting there weren't enough strong negative reactions to deter future PlayStation titles. "We assessed the exercise in two ways. Firstly, in terms of the straightforward success of the activity of publishing the game on PC, people liked it and they bought it. We also looked at it through the lens of what the PlayStation community thought about it. There was no massive adverse reaction to it. So we will continue to take mission steps in this direction," said Ryan.
Needless to say, PC sounds like it will be a big platform for Sony going forward with Days Gone helping lead the charge. Whether or not it'll just be bringing players up to speed with PS4 titles that may be getting sequels on PS5 or if it'll include PS5 titles as well remains to be seen. Ryan also talked a lot about the future of PSVR which will continue on PS5 with a new headset, DualSense-enabled controllers, a single cord tethered to the console. It sounds like the future is bright for PlayStation as the company continues to innovate and expand.
