For the first time, the NFL will have six playoff games in a single weekend. The so-called “Super” Wild Card Weekend is upon us, as the league’s expanded playoff field finally begins postseason play. 12 teams will be in action today with their sights set on a trip to Super Bowl LV in Tampa four weeks from tomorrow.
Up first is Wild Card Saturday, which will feature two of the three NFC games on the weekend’s schedule. However, first up is one of the more intriguing matchups of the first round, as the 11-5 Colts — somehow, the AFC’s seventh and final seed — travel to play the AFC East-winning Buffalo Bills.
After that contest, the NFC takes over with an NFC West divisional battle in the afternoon game. The third game between the Rams and Seahawks this season should be an interesting one; the two teams split their regular-season meetings, but both were low-scoring contests. Los Angeles earned a 23-16 win in week 10, then Seattle won 20-9 to clinch the division in week 16.
The third and final game of the day gives us the season’s worst playoff team by record, the 7-9 Washington Football Team, hosting the NFC’s top Wild Card squad in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Washington’s defensive front will be the storyline to watch; if they can make plays against Tom Brady and company, that might be enough to pull an upset.
However, Green Bay Packers fans will need to wait until Sunday to find out for sure who the Packers will host in the Divisional Round next weekend. The Packers will host the worst-seeded team remaining in the NFC after this weekend’s games, but the seventh-seeded Chicago Bears are in action tomorrow against the New Orleans Saints to make that final determination.
Join us here throughout the day as we follow along with the massive first day of a jam-packed football weekend!
Note: all games are available for mobile streaming on the NFL app or Yahoo! Sports app.
