Game 3 recap : A win to cure a case of the Mondays - The Cannon

The Columbus Blue Jackets turned a “case of the Mondays” into a step in the right direction with a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Although, it was quite literally a fight to the finish.

1st Period : Pain

Things started out a little dicey for the Jackets as Joonas Korpisalo had to pounce on a puck in the crease 13 seconds into the game. Then, the Jackets spent much of the first two minutes hemmed into their defensive zone.

In the first seven minutes of the game, both Eric Robinson and Boone Jenner lifted shots just a bit high causing them not to go into the net. Robinson’s miss was the toughest one to swallow. He sped down the ice at top speed before going one-on-one with Thomas Greiss. It felt like Robinson was going to be the first one on the board but fate and skill said otherwise.

Thanks to Bobby Ryan, the Red Wings ended up being the first team to get on the board today. A miscommunication between Alexandre Texier and Vladislav Gavrikov led to Ryan being able to score off the draw.

Near the halfway mark of the first, Seth Jones earned a penalty shot after Marc Staal hooked him on a breakaway. It appeared things were starting to turnaround for the Jackets but alas all they experienced was pain for Greiss snatched the puck before Jones could fire off a shot.

As the first period drew on, the Jackets struggled to make anything positive happen. When the clock wound to zero, the Jackets headed to the locker room looking deflated and down by one.

2nd Period : Hope

Within one minute of hitting the ice for the middle stanza of play, the Jackets headed to the penalty kill after David Savard tripped Dylan Larkin. The Wings maintained control for much of the kill. Let’s just say, it wasn’t the best start to the period.

Much like the first period, Korpisalo did a great job tracking Jon Merrill. He quickly realized whenever Merrill was unattended the Wings would feed him the puck. This ability to track a player who is an offensive threat when left to their own devices kept the Red Wings off the board in the second period.

After scooping up Jenner’s rebound, Oliver Bjorkstrand tied the game at one with 4:49 left in the second.

By the end of the period, there was a sense of hope in the air that the Jackets might come out of this game a winner.

3rd Period : Dream Achieved

A little over two minutes into the third period, the Jackets headed to the power play after Michael Del Zotto was tripped. Despite not scoring, the Jackets looked decent on the power play. Both Texier and Emil Bemstrom had two solid looks on net. One banged off the iron below the crossbar and the other Greiss was able to stuff at the last second.

Texier put the Jackets in the lead, 2-1, 5:10 into the last stanza of play with a wraparound goal. Effortless physical speed paired with mental quickness is what made this goal happen.

A minute and 16 seconds later, Pierre-Luc Dubois had a breakaway he was able to turn into a goal. The Jackets were flying high and ready to take home the win. First they had to go through a penalty kill, some spiciness between best friends, and a Red Wings goal to achieve their 3-2 victory.
