No. 4 Ohio State is on its way to moving to 5-0 overall as it leads 38-7 at the end of the third quarter at Michigan State. The Buckeyes have sputtered at times but mostly dominated with explosive plays in the run game, rolling up 263 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns so far against this Spartans defense. That's a credit to the performance of an offensive line that is down three starters, and the playmaking ability of quarterback Justin Fields.
Fields has been the star of the game with 158 yards through the air on 16-of-23 passing and 108 rushing yards on 12 attempts with three touchdowns (one passing, two rushing). Whether it's been third down conversions after Michigan State won first and second downs or taking broken plays and turning them into positive yards, Fields has been raising the floor of Ohio State's offense. The Spartans were stronger early in the game, but as the afternoon has worn on there are more chunk plays there for the taking, like Trey Sermon's 64-yard touchdown scamper midway through the third quarter.
There's still 15 minutes to play that will likely determine how this game is framed when debating Ohio State's place among the best teams in the country. A strong finish helps anchor the Buckeyes' argument as a deserving College Football Playoff contender while allowing Michigan State back into the game -- like what happened against Indiana -- will take some shine off of Saturday's win.
