Games with Tennessee this week and LSU next week are all that stand between No. 6 Florida and an SEC Championship Game showdown with No. 1 Alabama that could land the Gators a spot in the College Football Playoff. The Gators started that quest by taking a 17-7 halftime lead on the Volunteers at Neyland Stadium on Saturday. This once-great annual showdown has lost its luster amid Tennessee's prolonged descent into mediocrity, but a Vols team that has lost 14 of its last 15 games against the Gators showed some fight early in the game.
Despite entering with a 2-5 record due largely to woeful offense, the Vols pieced together a 96-yard scoring drive in the first half with true freshman quarterback Harrison Bailey making his first career start. But Bailey will have his hands full if he's going to help the Vols keep pace with the high-powered Florida offense in the second half. The Gators' Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback, Kyle Trask, reached 36 touchdowns for the season in the first half with a pair of touchdown tosses against a Tennessee secondary that has mustered just three interceptions all season. That's the second-most in a single season in UF history, and Trask has accomplished it through 8.5 games against SEC competition.
