No. 6 Florida is officially on upset alert, trailing LSU 24-17 after the first half at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday night. The Gators, led by Heisman Trophy candidate Kyle Trask, got cranked up right away. However, their 11-play, 74-yard opening drive was stopped by the LSU defense on the 1-yard line. Trask led Florida down on the ensuing drive and punched it in from a yard out to open scoring.
LSU, led by true freshman quarterback Max Johnson, marched right back down the field. Johnson hit Jaray Jenkins for the 5-yard touchdown to even things up. Trask has been a little shaky all night. He threw a pick six to Eli Ricks early in the second quarter, another wild pick off of a ricochet in the red zone to stall out a 60-yard drive, and he fumbled on a sack right before halftime that resulted in a Tigers field goal.
Trask hit Jacob Copeland from 19 yards out for his only touchdown pass of first half. That was his 39th of the season, which ties Danny Wuerffel's single-season program record. Johnson, who is making his first career start, hasn't been intimidated by the big stage. He led the Tigers on a beautiful 2-minute scoring drive at the end of the half that culminated with a 34-yard toss to a wide open Kayshon Boutte to take the lead into the break. Johnson is 12-of-19 for 122 yards and two touchdowns, and Trask is 18-of-30 for 256 yards with three turnovers.
