The Dallas Cowboys are heading into another divisional game this week against the NFC East-leading Philadelphia Eagles and really have their backs against the wall. With backup quarterback Andy Dalton doubtful for the game this week, it falls to rookie seventh-round pick Ben DiNucci to lead the Cowboys offense. The question is will he be able to work against a tough Eagles defensive line.
Lets see what the NFL experts think about the Cowboys week eight game versus the Philadelphia Eagles.
ProFootballTalk (Mike Florio): Eagles 27, Cowboys 10
The Cowboys are the NFC equivalent of the Jets — both bad and non-competitive.
Well that was short, and kind of insulting, if we’re being honest.
ProFootballTalk (Michael Smith): Eagles 31, Cowboys 14
The NFC East is weak, but the Eagles are clearly the best team in it. They’ll make that clear against the Cowboys.
At least his wasn’t insulting, but another one in the loss column for the Cowboys.
ThePhillyVoice (Matt Mullin): Eagles 33, Cowboys 20
I’m trying to not overthink this one too much. With the Cowboys on their third-string QB — assuming Andy Dalton isn’t cleared to play and they’re forced to roll with Ben DiNucci — it suddenly becomes a much easier pick to make. Had Dalton been healthy all week, there would have to be some concern about the Eagles chances in this one. But that’s no longer the case.
The Eagles offense, which could be getting some reinforcements this week, shouldn’t have any trouble scoring against what has been one of the worst defenses in football. And the Cowboys already appear to be in tank mode, trading away and releasing veterans, despite the fact that a win on Sunday would put them back in first place in the NFC East. With poor play on the field bleeding over into the locker room, they appear to be the true definition of a dumpster fire — and that’s saying something considering the division in which they play.
My only pseudo-concern here is over the Cowboys’ skill players. The Eagles defense has been solid up front, but there have been more than a few issues on the backend. And the prospect of guys like Amari Cooper and Ceedee Lamb running free in the secondary is always a worry. That’s the only reason I see this game being slightly closer than some of my colleagues, but it should still be a
comfortablewin for the Eagles. (Is there any such thing as a comfortable win for this team?)
Looks like even the Eagles writers are a little worried, but still give them a healthy margin of victory.
Sporting News (Vinnie Iyer): Eagles 27, Cowboys 14
The Eagles are fueled by the relentless energy of Carson Wentz. His mental and physical toughness has brought them back from a rough start based on injuries around him. The Cowboys showed little life after Dak Prescott went down and even less when Andy Dalton did. There’s a big disconnect under Mike McCarthy. The Eagles can smell a chance to run away with a weak division vs. sweating it out until December. There’s a good chance rookie seventh-rounder Ben DiNucci starts and maybe he provides some spark on the road. But the well-rested Eagles should rip into them on both sides of the ball.
As DJ Khalid would say “Another One”. Starting to see a trend here.
NFL.com (Gregg Rosenthal): Eagles 25, Cowboys 14
With Andy Dalton at quarterback, the Cowboys were the worst team in the NFL for seven quarters. There’s no particular reason to believe that’s going to change if Ben DiNucci gets the start on Sunday night. The Eagles are getting healthier with Jalen Reagor, Jason Peters, Dallas Goedert, Malik Jackson and Miles Sanders all having a chance to return this week. Carson Wentz’s miracle finish against the Giants could prove to be the turning point of Philly’s season. There’s no reason why the Eagles shouldn’t win this game easily and improve as their roster heals itself.
He’s not wrong, the Eagles are starting to get healthy.
ESPN (Todd Archer): Eagles, 31, Cowboys 17
Philadelphia running back Boston Scott will rush for more than 100 yards. He has just 113 on the season through seven games, but the Cowboys have allowed more than 200 yards rushing as a team in three of the past four games. They are allowing a league-worst 178.3 yards per game on the ground. Even with a banged-up offensive line, the Eagles will be able to get the job done with Scott on the ground. Miles Sanders hasn’t practiced this week.
Jeez Todd, have a little faith. The Cowboys have made a few defensive adjustments.
CBS Sports (Pete Prisco): Eagles 34, Cowboys 16
It’s hard to believe that this is a big game, but it is. That’s how bad the NFC East is this season. The Cowboys might be playing with Ben Dinucci with the injury to Andy Dalton. This will be his first start. The problem will be his offensive line against the Eagles front. It won’t be pretty. The Eagles will have a nice offensive showing as well. This will be a blowout.
It’s just hard to find anyone with faith in the ‘Boys.
As you can see, all of the experts this week are taking the Eagles to win this one pretty convincingly. Nevertheless, the Cowboys, led by Ben DiNucci, are going to step on the field and try to win this game no matter what the experts say or think.
